Free as in -boot

To freeboot is to commit an act of piracy without the authorization of any government or state. Derived from the Dutch, from vrijbuit (“plunder, spoils”) +‎ -er or vrijbuiten +‎ -er (from vrijbuit (“plunder”)), from vrij (“free”) + buit (“booty”). Lately the term has been used to refer to the sharing of digital media beyond the limits of restrictive distribution controls. Here's your Monday morning free thread!

I went to a most enjoyable concert in Chicago last week: the Babyklok tour, featuring Dethklok (Metalocalypse; previously on the blue) and Babymetal. Tons of fun, although a bit tiring (3 1/2 hours, most of it standing), and I was very glad to have brought earplugs; at one point, it felt as if they had put subwoofers in the lobby below us. I now have a pink T-shirt with Dr. Rockso on it.

Googling "free booty" brought up THE BEST AT HOME BOOTY WORKOUT (No Equipment, 20 mins). There's a "we have booty at home" joke in there somewhere.

Anyone else waiting with tentative eagerness for the next season of Our Flag Means Death? Complicated feelings about that show but I want to see someone get a happy ending. This may or may not be a double entendre.

My dad sent me a link to "Lover's Concerto," a beautiful old song I forgot about. When I searched for it again, I found a lovely a cappella (mostly) cover that sounds like a character in a musical on her deathbed.

I accidentally sent a laser pointer through the laundry a month ago. I checked at Staples to replace this thing that cost me under twenty dollars there originally and found that they were currently $78 plus tax.

The pet store up the street has laser pointers as cat toys for $7.99. Fare thee well, Staples!

I discovered a large rat in my bedroom closet the other day. I quickly closed the door and wondered what to do, while the rat clawed and scratched at the other side of the door. Finally, it occurred to me: open the damn door! And sure enough the rat scurried out and ran outside. The lesson: sometimes you have to just let go of the reins and let nature take its course.

I learned today that my 4-year-old nephew doesn't know how to play as a pirate besides "yar" and "I'm the captain of the boat"

(a) is there an age appropriate version of "treasure island"?

My midterm for my Film Production 125 class is to do a 1 to 3 minute "video portrait" of a person, place, or thing, which based on the examples shown by the teacher is a short interview or voiceover with other shots showing the subject doing their thing, but is otherwise open ended except for two rules: the time limit, and you have to shoot/record your own audio and video.

So, I mentally ran through my rolodex of interesting people -- a glass blower, a tintype photographer -- and settled on two friends of mine, sisters who have a bustling business repairing saddles and other horse tack. The one who does most of the leatherwork was happy to participate, the other has grad student work of her own and not a lot of spare time, so I scheduled a shoot for next Monday at 1pm with the one and the second one is welcome if she can make it happen.

The assignment has one other aspect, which isn't a rule exactly, but it is heavily suggested that you should be filming this as a crew with other students helping with sound, lights, other assistanty-stuff.

I don't have a lot of connections because I don't live on campus, don't have any other classes with these other students, and I'm much, much older than---oh, hell, I shouldn't be making excuses.

Asking for help is always hard.

Even if I knew everyone well and had breakfast with them every day and etc., it would still be hard for me to ask for help.

So, I arrived in class and sat with my 'group', who I do team assignments with, who are four young women who are Animation majors and mostly are taking this class because they're forced to, and asked them if they could help. I was clearly nervous and mad at myself being nervous, but I asked and I got one 'maybe' because she had to check her schedule, so at least I didn't fall apart or die or any of the other things I was feeling over needing to ask.

I only really need one helper (although two would be nice), and I have a backup plan -- I asked my class team first because I have a history of working with them, but I have worked with other students on non-team stuff who I'll ask Wendesday at class if I don't get an affirmative from the Animation women. Worse case scenario, I did plan things where I could do it alone, with a lot more setup time.

The age difference still feels like a factor though, and this isn't a complaint, and if they have worries they're not being dismissed here, but I'm a middle aged dude asking young women to go out to a rural farm with me and I'm very conscious of not seeming creepy. It was a debate in my head whether to point out that since my subject makes saddles, she has horses, so the possibility of getting to pet a horse should be a winning bonus (regardless of gender, I want to pet a horse too), but then again I'm an old dude asking them if they want to come out to a farm to pet horses and that seems a little too far over the 'creepy' line.

So, we'll see Wednesday if my one team-mate can make it work, and if not I'll ask a few other students, and even if that doesn't work out, my project should go well.

I probably SHOULD say something since we went butt-themed for a while....(I will NOT be talking about butts, however).

Am getting a bit nervous - I was supposed to hear back on Friday about "the interview schedule for round 2" for a wind farm job I've applied to. The recruiter didn't post it, she reached out to me on Linkedin, and it seems a promising fit. She and I had a couple of promising calls, during which we even mutually realized that the office is in my neighborhood and is even across the street from the place I've been working part time. I was supposed to hear about the interviews with the managers proper on Friday. But...nothing. I gave her all day Friday for a grace period, then reached out in email first thing this morning asking if she had any news for me because "I was really interested in the position and wanted to hear more!" No word back yet.

I'm really hoping that this isn't another case of "we gave your resume to the hiring managers along with 5 other people and they picked other people to talk to instead, soreeeee". I've had that happen to me like six times by now and it's REALLY god-damn annoying.

On the brighter side - I'd actually already begun a sort of overhaul of my spending a few months before I got laid off, and so switching into Big-Time-Budget mode was fairly easy. In fact - my grocery bills have gone down over the past several months, as have impulse buys and other frills. Netflix is pulling the plug on its DVD program on Friday so my Netflix subscription went way down. I'm actually in the black enough this month that I can put some money into all my savings. The weather was also crappy enough this weekend that I was able to justify staying home all weekend for some domestic things - freezing a backlog of CSA vegetables for later use, and a ton of baking that used up a collection of half-empty bags of chopped nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, etc. (I had a half cup of butterscotch chips I was never going to use otherwise; but mixed with other scant traces of raisins, dried cranberries, and a couple kinds of nuts they make a dang fine cookie.)

....I still wanna know what's up with the wind farm people though.

I went to the pharmacy to get a five pack of insulin pens, and the pharmacist gave me five five-packs. I knew something was wrong when he handed me the package, it was too heavy and the wrong shape. But it was all taped shut in a fridge bag inside a paper bag, so I didn't open it, I just asked and they reassured me it was five pens.

So free insulin! They're only 6$ in Australia though so I returned them. I'm not going to burn my nearest pharmacy for 24$. Now if this was American insulin...

Which is wild. I've heard of people going without or rationing it because they can't afford it. And dying! But the last time I taught this class I got a lot of blank faces and people who did not feel inclined to engage, so I am steeling myself for that.

Okay, I'm not so fussed about the wind farm job any more because -

Last week I had an interview somewhere else, a more corporate position with a business consultancy firm. It was the second round, with the dude I'd be working for; it'd be a hybrid EA/OM position. It wouldn't be the most exciting work in the world, but it'd be stable and the price was right, the tasks were all shit I can do in my sleep, and the commute was reasonable.

The dude said I was the first person they interviewed, and I would likely have a couple other people to talk to. Okay, no problem. I sent him a thank you like a good girl scout afterward and sat back to wait.

....He just replied to my thank you personally to say that he liked our chat, and had a feeling I'd be a pretty good fit - he was still working on some "internal stuff" but urged me to reach out if I needed to hear from them in a more timely fashion.

I mean, it's not an offer until it's an offer, but I think that's a very good sign, yeah?

AzraelBrown, a more respectful and reassuring inducement for women in college might be to emphasize how cool and badasss your women saddle-repairing friends are, and how excited you are to to get to learn some more about a woman who is a master of her craft and a successful business owner.

But of course also mention the horses; everyone loves horses.

Oh, that's part of my objective for the interview -- the saddle-making-and-repair industry is very male centric, and these women are very pro-feminist about their business, in their hiring interns and their support of young women 4Hers, etc. They are super badass.

But, you're right, I actually didn't really explain to potential helpers why I was interviewing her, just that we were interviewing her at her workshop on her farm. I can try that Wednesday if they're still on the fence.

(I know these women because they have a booth in the antique mall I am also in where they sell saddles and other stuff, and everyone bristles when a customer comes in and wants to either make an offer to or talk to the "saddle guy". Even after correcting them, they'll still use masculine pronouns. Some old dudes don't get it. )

Here's another thing that actually happened to me.

A long, long time ago, in a convenience store somewhere in Rhode Island I was starting the chores on the overnight shift by filling the cigarette rack when a couple of guys walked in. They were young, dressed nicely in dress shirts and slacks, and they headed back to the refrigerated section. I figured they were buying beer for a party.

They came up to the counter with five dozen eggs.

"That's a lot of eggs," I said.

They looked at each other, completely expressionless. Then they looked back at me, and one of them said, "Yes. That's a lot of eggs."

I rang them up and they left.

For reasons that will soon become clear, let's flash back to my job the previous summer painting the dorms for my college. One afternoon I'd found a sticker on a closet that said Grover Bedtime Buddies, with a picture of Grover the Muppet waving happily on it. Obviously, I had to have it, so I'd carefully peeled it off and put it on the back of a random business card in my wallet.

Back to the convenience store. The next night, the very same egg purchasers came in at the same time, just about midnight. They were dressed the same, and they walked back to the same case. They came up and put seven dozen eggs on the counter.

"That's a lot of eggs," I said.

They looked at each other, then looked back at me. "Yes," one of them said. "That's a lot of eggs."

The other one held up a flashlight, on which was a sticker that said Oscar The Grouch Bedtime Buddies. "We're with the Oscar The Grouch Bedtime Buddies," he said.

I took out my wallet, pulled out the card, and said, "I'm with the Grover Bedtime Buddies."

They looked at each other, completely expressionless, then turned back to me.

One of them said, "Then you know about the Hair Club For Men."

"What about the Hair Club For Men?" I replied.

They looked at each other. Their expressions didn't change, but I sensed in their hesitation a profound disappointment, as if I'd failed an important test. They turned back to me.

"They're committing atrocities," one of them said.

The other nodded. "Atrocities," he said.

I rang them up and they left.

I confess I chortled at this, mygothlaundry. It captured my last 2 weeks perfectly. So many thanks. It reached fever pitch last night and I cracked. I resolved years ago that I would break the male tradition in my family of anger as the principal response to frustration. It has worked astonishingly well. Last night, it didn't. Thank heavens it was on the internet and I was able to step away and leave it. I was furious. So furious it made me laugh out loud. So furious that I was awash with go to war, take no prisoners, murder hormones, to the extent that I felt wasted, a sensation I haven't known for 15 years and don't want to know again. Curiously, where once my fury would have swallowed me whole, I kind of watched it and again, chuckled at it's craziness. I laughed even louder when fury voice said, "if that Cee you Next Tuesday was here now I'd chin the clucker" partly cos of the extremity of my response but not less, cos I am a retired prof in his 70s and the Cee you next Tuesday, is a former local hard man turned 50 year old builder, built like Mike Tyson and very familiar with the red zone himself. It would not have gone well. Instead I said nothing, let the 'slaughter them all and burn their houses' cocktail sluice thru the system and out of the window and first thing this morning, fired off a calm, solution seeking message without a single reference to what had transpired. I am back to patience and acceptance, back to quietly managing chaos, to coaxing the intractable in preferred directions, looking for a win win for all. I am still chuckling and amused that somehow I enjoyed it all, even my own ridiculousness. Believe me there are perspectives on oneself at this age that are either invisible, not easily seen or non existent at earlier ages. It's a lot of fun this business of 'getting old' as people call it, in a truly shocking misnomer. I look forward to the next 20 years and will do my utmost 1) not to chin any Mike Tysons 2) not to chuckle when Mefites just out of their teens describe themselves as 'an old.' Damn. I broke one of those resolutions already!!!!!

So I'm sick, but at least it isn't covid! Kind of thinking strep at this point. If I'm not on the mend by tomorrow I'll see about getting some kind of active treatment, but it's not really too bad. It feels a bit like a vacation, honestly. Just sick enough that staying home and resting is the thing to do, without being so sick that it's not restful.

i asked bard.google.com to write me song lyrics about using tomatoes as eyeglasses and this is what i got -

(Verse 1)
I used to be a bookworm, but my vision started to fade
I couldn't read the smallest words, no matter how hard I tried
But then one day, I had an idea, a crazy one at that
I'd try using tomatoes as eyeglasses, give it a shot

(Chorus)
Oh, tomatoes, tomatoes, my new glasses so fine
You help me see the world in a whole new light
From the smallest ant to the tallest pine
Everything is crystal clear, thanks to you, my favorite sight

(Verse 2)
At first, people laughed at me, they said I was a fool
But I didn't care, I knew my tomatoes were cool
Now, everyone wants to try my tomato glasses
They're the latest trend, the hottest new fashion

(Chorus)
Oh, tomatoes, tomatoes, my new glasses so fine
You help me see the world in a whole new light
From the smallest ant to the tallest pine
Everything is crystal clear, thanks to you, my favorite sight

(Bridge)
So if you're looking for a new way to see
Try tomatoes, they're the best glasses for free
They're juicy, they're red, and they're good for your eyes
So next time you're at the store, don't forget to buy

(Chorus)
Oh, tomatoes, tomatoes, my new glasses so fine
You help me see the world in a whole new light
From the smallest ant to the tallest pine
Everything is crystal clear, thanks to you, my favorite sight

(Outro)
Oh, tomatoes, tomatoes, I love you so
My tomato glasses, they help me see
The world around me, in all its glory
Thanks to tomatoes, I can see clearly

hmm, needs a little work, but it's still the best song about tomatoes as eyeglasses i've ever run across

I have to agree with you, pyramid termite. That is the best song about tomatoes as eyeglasses that I have encountered, too.

Of all the songs about tomatoes as eyeglasses I've ever heard...that's it. That's the only one.

Aaaaaaaaaaand now the Green Job people finally reached back out and yes, they want to interview me. I have given them several ideas for possible dates.

And a job with the city also wants to talk to me on Thursday afternoon.

...Two weeks ago I'd signed up to attend a job fair this coming Friday, but I was having second thoughts today; it'd be 40 minutes to get into the city to get there, and the advertised recruiters weren't for my field; I could meet with the staffing service that hosted it all, but that may have been it. A job coach I've been working with convinced me to still go because something might just come of it, you never know. "If you're not doing anything else, go ahead, but if you get an interview skip it."

I may end up skipping it after all.

I'm working on 3 hours of sleep. I have ballet class in less than an hour. My brain says go, it'll feel good to stretch and catch up with a friend. My body says, what the ever loving hell are you thinking. I'm exhausted.

Luckily I pay by the class and not a monthly tuition so I'm not out any money.

Thing is if I don't go, I'll collapse into bed and then I'll wake up at some ungodly hour and not be able to get back to sleep and the entire thing will repeat.

I finally cried in therapy today. It takes so much for me to cry but when I do it's always cathartic. I feel better just having got that out.

In positive news the new IT people at my company are actually going to work on this annoying bug that I've been dealing with for the past year and a half. The previous IT did nothing but now they're actually making it a priority. So fingers crossed.

Sharing a funny exchange my roommate and I just had, because I think we're all a bit tense and could use a laugh....(The roommate, it should be understood, partakes of cannabis.)
ME: I have a question.

ROOMIE: Okay?

ME: So, I'm going to be watching 2001: A Space Odyssey for my blog sometime this afternoon.

ROOMIE: Right....?

ME: When is the best time for me to take an edible?

ROOMIE: (laughs)
(For the record, he suggests timing it so that it kicks in during either the first half or during the last 10 minutes.)

When 2001 got a fresh new restoration maybe 25 years ago, I was in San Francisco and went to see it at the Castro Theater for what might have been maybe the 5th time light had been shown through the print. It was the full Castro Theater presentation with the "sky" going dark before the movie started and the pipe organ playing before the film.

Anyway, I had this pot cookie the size of my face that I ate during the first act of the film. It started to kick in fully during the final act, which is the perfect time to be fried out of your mind.

2001: A Space Odyssey

My mom took me to see that movie when I was 12. Absolutely blew my tiny little mind...although I didn't really understand the ending at the time.
