π£π£π«±πΏππ½ππΌβHi everyone,βππΌππ½π«±πΏπ£π£
MetaFilter is beginning the transition to becoming a non-profit (seee this thread ) and to begin that process, a temporary transitional board is needed. This board of volunteers would establish a basic framework for the future site, along with defining what to look for in an Executive Director
We have several volunteers already, but most are based in the United States and have similar backgrounds, so weβre casting our net wider to encourage a more globally diverse board.
Interested? Let us know in the October 18, 2023 MetaTalk thread about changing the site to nonprofit.

Forgive me, been clicking around and reading the various threads linked here and through those but I'm not really seeing a simple answer to why there's a transition to non-profit at all?

GoblinHoney, it's in the first "MeFi Business/Legal Update" site owner jessamyn posted on Oct. 3. Benefits of becoming a nonprofit organization:
"1. Actual community-run site. A non-profit board would have actual power over money, staffing, development, and decision-making
"2. Donations could be tax deductible, giving more options for donors, soliciting funds, etc.
"3. Less expensive productivity tools (Slack and Google tools become free for example) leading to lower site costs
"4. Volunteers can help with the site legally"

I welcome our new not-making-a-profit-intentionally-overlords. Seriously though, this is good.

Does this mean there is possibly a metafilter.org or mefi.org in the offing?

Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere and it's totally up to whatever new board or organization is formed.
