All the economy needs is love. "Japan is suffering from deflation and I think there are a lot of people who want to be helped," said one businessman, who had already been hugged twice. Excuse me, fuller has to go camp out in the Sailor Mercury hug line now.

Hugging is not a common custom in Japan and many people were overcome by emotion when embraced.

Awwwww..... That's cute!

No hugging? Good Christ they must think we're like whores here in America then.

the Japanese are very formal and old-fashioned -- displays of affection, anger, etc are considered bad form and are to be avoided at all cost

Not really, many Japanese cite warmth and friendliness as Americans' best asset (or only one, these days). But it has taken quite a while for my mother-in-law to get used to me hugging her. When my wife is going over to her house, I always tell her to give Mom a big smooch for me, which I know isn't going to happen. About 60% of Japanese weddings are Christian style white weddings, these days, and you should see the hemming, hawing and giggling in rehearsal when they have to kiss, [mortified expression] IN FRONT OF THEIR PARENTS! .....

The 51-year-old holy woman attributed the emotion to nothing more than a lack of love in the modern world.

This is so SAD! No, I don't mean sad as in pathetic, I mean sad as in tears nearly came to my eyes. To think of all those people in so much need of a little affection....

Big virtual hugs everyone. Yes, even for you Hama7.

There's an ad for Rush Limbaugh in the google ads. He's got to be the last person on earth I would want a hug from.

Well, there you are, you hell-bound secularist you. When your soul reaches the point of loving Rush as yourself you'll have achieved kensho and been born again and all that. In the mean time, be reminded of what fuller (yea even fuller) knows too well, namely that snarkiness is one step away from from hate. Rotsa ruck, matey.

Snarkiness leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

I guess I just need a hug.

h - as the Buddha said, snarkiness is the ultimate cause of all suffering.

The looks of horror on my Uncle's faces when I go to hug them is one of the funniest things ever. I have four uncles, they are all from 5'3" to 5'6", weighing about a buck forty each. I'm 6', 215. Whenever Mom and I leave Japan they all know they're going to get the big squeeze from me, and they hate it. But my aunts all just cackle in delight. Japanese got to loosen up a bit.

By the way..."dakko" - pronounced "duck-ko" means "hug" in Japanese.
