Come on in to The Fedora Lounge. Grab a martini, maybe a pack of smokes, and join in the conversation about the clothing, music, furniture, architecture, lifestyle and just plain old style of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. From the folks behind Retro Radar.

The folks behind Retro Rader are also the folks behind the late, great Atomic Magazine.

If you're into swing/big band/dance of the era, you want to be at Yehoodi as well.

Excellent site. I only wish there was something as massively comprehensive for the Tiki lifestyle; then I could combine the two into a mega-site whose retro power would become the strongest force in the universe! *coughs* Er, sorry about that. I'd just like to add that I'm pissed Worth & Worth went bankrupt, they made excellent Fedora's for a while of which I still own two.

What model is that, the "Debonair Sysadmin"?

Wow, too bad about Atomic Magazine, I really loved that, but apparently not enough.... I need to get that Martini shaker, but I'll make top shelf margaritas in mine.

If you're a fan of these ridiculously comprehensive online retro resources, Port Halcyon does it pretty well, too.

So who said swing was dead? I gather it's just waiting for the end of the next seven-year cycle in order to be revived, rehashed and reinterpreted. Though modern lounge and cocktail culture seem to always be in fashion, at least in the bigger cities. Viva la Martini, bay-bee.

I just installed Fedora the other day. Works pretty well.

TheNakedPixel,
I was just gonna say - who's nostalgic for 1996 already? That's an awfully long time to hold a torch.

Eekacat, you stir a martini.
posted by kenko at 9:41 AM on December 18, 2004

That's not necessarily true, kenko. It is a popular myth than gin can be "bruised" by ice when shaken (ask a friend to pick out the bruised piece from a lineup), though stirring does tend to minimize any ice crystals or shards that end up floating in the drink. It is ultimately a matter of personal taste and should not be dictated by Fleming's fictional stylings.

Dang, I want a pair of those Spectators! They'd go sweet with my vintage '30's tux!

Swing is definitely not dead. Most dancers I know are pretty thrilled that it's a smaller subculture again, instead of the unsustainable fad it was in the late 90s.

'Scuse the late entry to the conversation, but gotta agree with Miko. I've been dancing for about 3 years (since after it stopped being cool again), and it's really a community of regulars at this point. Of course, the actual dancing, music, and vintage styles are also big appeals to me. I'd better stop typing; I could geek out on swing for pages. Mmm, before-my-time cool.
