Happy Birthday, Metafilter! July 13, 2005 9:39 PM Subscribe
Cat-Scan.com is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, or why.

It seems Cat-Scans is currently redesigning their site, but there archives are still there. I don't know if I agree with squeezing cats into a scanner for the pleasure of the internet viewing public. It just seems cruel to me. posted by keswick at 9:43 PM on July 13, 2005

As I was walking home this evening, a little girl was moblogging her cat to Flickr. She still used both hands on her cellphone as she struggled to find the "@" sign. It reminded me of when I was a teenager and how badly I wanted a computer but couldn't get one. My parents wouldn't let me have my own computer until I was 21; my mom just told me to use dad's computer in the master bedroom. I'd pass the computer shops and just look, having given up asking my parents about it long ago. I eventually did get an IBM PC 286 after much pleading and begging. Amazingly, getting my first iBook at 26 and the subsequent DSL/wi-fi connection passed without incident. posted by brownpau at 10:21 PM on July 13, 2005
Aw, no one going to post a big, noisy, flash animation birthday card to the front page?

My, how time flies. (And fruit flies, of course.) Matt's little sociology project is now six years old, and all ready for the first grade. I can't even remember how I used to spend the hours and hours of MeFi-less time I had way back when in the 90s. God bless us, every one. I should get out of here, I remember reading that post the first time as if it were yesterday back in my lurking days..... And this cracked me up: Try to avoid scanning the Cat's genitals. We really don't need to see Fluffy's junk up close and personal. posted by dabitch at 1:03 AM on July 14, 2005

A fish in every pant! So, at six, metafilter is developmentally at the inititative vs. guilt stage, is just going to school, and is rather snotty. It seems then that the best present one could give a six-year old who is gaining abilitiy intellectually and physically would be a pike. Cheers, all! posted by moonbird at 5:00 AM on July 14, 2005
I have never attempted to scan a walrus. I wouldn't even know where to start. In fact, I don't think I agree with it. posted by VulcanMike at 5:05 AM on July 14, 2005

You know, I have two scanners, and two cats, and yet I've never yet tried to combine them in any way. Perhaps I should. You can't just keep reading this post every year and not eventually think "Hey, I've scanned my own butt on a photocopier, why not the cats as well?" posted by caution live frogs at 6:13 AM on July 14, 2005

Ha! The Great Mr. Schmidt! Jazeker - still enjoying it in fact :)
I'm trying to keep clear of 9723 though for the moment because I'm still in vodka rehab. Please send my regards to Berry of Cran and his royal Niceness the Donkey, they asked about me and I'm doing fine. I'll check in before 7/27, though - just look for the passed-out guy on the lawn. posted by goodnewsfortheinsane at 9:21 AM on July 14, 2005

Wow, the very first MeTa post was by jessamyn! And she requested the very first pony, which was promised by Matt and never implemented:
jessamyn - will work on threading. there were some performance issues in the past, but I'll look into it. This post is a perfect example of why I wish I had threading, I wish this answer were directly below yours.

languagehat -
That also caught my eye. I laughed when I read it. Not because of the non-implemented pony, but because the pony is threaded conversations. HA! Recently when people have asked for threading Matt's been against it. (thanks Matt, I wouldn't want threading) But it's funny to go back and see that. I guess we're ALL stuck with our posting history. posted by raedyn at 12:16 PM on July 14, 2005
