How corrupt is your country?

The 2005 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index is out. (Last year's report discussed here.) This time around, there are notes on the methodology (short, long, both pdf). Iceland wins, with Chad a distant 158th.

Last year USA was tied for 17th. This year we have 17th all to our own. Woo-hoo! Progress!

My favourite fact about Iceland is that it has the oldest Parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930AD and exists to this day. Iceland rocks my socks off and I will be going there sometime soon to revel in the general awesomeness of it's beauty.

Incidentally (and this may be better on AskMeFi) - why do all the Scandinavian lands kick ass in every way?

My theory about why Scandinavian lands kick ass in every way is because they are small and cold. Life in Scandinavia was very hard, and inhabited by real hardasses for a veyr long time. Because of the hardships the natural environment produces, they have no tolerance for people who make things worse, least of all jerks who abuse positions of authority.

From my experience (Finnish family, have traveled quite a bit in Scandinavia), Scandinavians (and Finns if you exclude them), have no tolerance for even the appearance of corruption. It's no coincidence that Scandinavia consistently enjoys superlative quality of living and has no tolerance for any corruption.

Very much well worth the effort. I’ve considered moving there. Less so since the whole global warming thing. Still, make sure you hit the blue lagoon. I used to live in there.
(And pick up a sweater)

Nice cops too. No guns. Very polite. As a result of that when we got busted my buddy and I decided not to kill them and split even though they had no cuffs on us and no divider between the front and rear seats.
/tongue in cheek.

Seriously tho, it’s amazing just how far that moral authority goes. It's almost like not listening to your parents. No heavy authority trip like you get in the USA.
Nevertheless Saturday nights in Reykjavik are wild.

You weren't at Keflavik were you Smedleyman?

p.s. UK cops generally don't pack and I know you wouldn't kill a cop unless absolutely necessary ;)

WOOT! NZ gets one place better!

I reckon we can take Finland next year.

My old boss was using last year's version of this report to try to win overseas work. It seemed to work pretty well.
