I'm surprised that no-one is actively using thepenismightier.com/net/org... although the org seems to want to upload a file of indeterminate qualities to me. posted by PurplePorpoise at 9:29 PM on April 25, 2006
Maybe they didn't realize the dash is a legal character in domain names. posted by jam_pony at 9:33 PM on April 25, 2006
Also this grupthink site totally sucks. I tried to add 'grupthink.com' as an entry but then it asked for an email address and that was just too much work.
Actually Paul Grahm wrote that you should never make users register with an email address to you're your service, and I agree with him. It's idiotic. What's the point? There was a web2.0-powered word-clone released a while back, and I'm sure about 95% of the people curious to try it didn't because of the need to register via Email. I know I didn't. posted by delmoi at 9:43 PM on April 25, 2006
thepenismightier reminds me of Celebrity Jeopardy on SNL.

expertsexchange.com changed its name to the much less fun experts-exchange.com unfortunately.
Then there was the widely believed hoax that the Italian company PowerGen had the URL www.powergenitalia.com. posted by Hubajube at 10:11 PM on April 25, 2006
Morrison & Foerster did that on purpose and they are widely known as MoFo and take a perverse pride in the name. Although, I think they recently decided to move away from it. posted by Falconetti at 11:08 PM on April 25, 2006
I know a guy who uses countzero101@ as his email address. I asked him how hard that is to explain over the phone and he said it is mighty hard. Points for sticking with it though, I suppose. posted by geekyguy at 11:17 PM on April 25, 2006
Have they really? That's interesting. I've had friends throughout the seventies, eighties and nineties who worked for Morrison & Foerster, and they always refer(red) to it as 'MoFo'. posted by trip and a half at 11:23 PM on April 25, 2006
I already tried this, but apparently SNL even more already tried this. Though it gets additional points for actually being real. posted by dgaicun at 11:48 PM on April 25, 2006

geekyguy: once when i was a technical support engineer, i had to ask a caller for his email address. i won't repeat that address here, but i laughed after hanging up because his email address professed his adoration of a popular singer. he seemed slightly embarrassed about it! posted by clyde at 11:56 PM on April 25, 2006
And if I'd clicked on the original link, instead of rushing to post them, I'd have seen they were numbers 1 and 2 in the list. Will I ever learn? posted by MrMustard at 12:07 AM on April 26, 2006

huevos is Spanish for eggs, it's also slang for the male testicles. posted by onalark at 1:06 AM on April 26, 2006
Heh. I'm not sure if that's a joke or not. But lots of anglophone monolingual types do pronounce heuvos so that it sounds very similar indeed to 'webos'.
I work at a nonprofit political group and we had to deal with whorepresents.org a while back. I think half a day was wasted sending e-mails back and forth a la Sean Connery on the Jeopardy SNL skits. posted by XQUZYPHYR at 4:33 AM on April 26, 2006
Then there was the widely believed hoax that the Italian company PowerGen had the URL www.powergenitalia.com.
Snopes says "The powergenitalia.com domain apparently hosts the web site of a real Italian company (Powergen Italia) which sells specialized battery products." Not a hoax, then, but no relation to the UK PowerGen company.
webos = huevos? That's stretching it.
Dunno about Latin America, but in Spain (or so my Malaga-born teacher said) the b/v sounds are indistinguishable: to Spanish ears Barcelona and Valencia start with the same consonant. posted by rory at 4:33 AM on April 26, 2006

"Webos" is common IRC-spelling of "huevos". v and b are the same sound, and given that h is mute, "hue" is prounounced something like "we". posted by Joakim Ziegler at 8:41 AM on April 26, 2006

It's a hassle/reward ratio issue. I was willing to put up with the obsessive-compulsive rewarding required to sign up when I did, and newer members here are willing to shell out the five bucks to join the HomestarmyMeFi, because MeFi promises an almost infinite amount of sweet contenty lovin' in return.
Requiring more than five seconds worth of effort to vote in a web poll or post a blog comment or whatnot, knowing your relationship with it is gonna be a one-minute stand, ain't worth it. posted by arto at 9:00 PM on April 26, 2006
