Confession: when I was in college, an EE friend and I started to build something similar. Nicknamed "BeerMaster," ours was going to have a sonar rangefinder (ripped off a camera), a turntable mount, pneumatic firing mechanism, and a voice-recognition system.
The idea was that you could shout "Beer me!" and the gun would pivot and fire a beer at you. You were supposed to grab the incoming beer.
...naturally, there were all kinds of serious problems. Like the fact that we never quite got the voice system working, there were LOTS of misfires. We also had trouble with the sonar -- it seemed to target randomly, and we were never able to get variable charges out of the compressed-air system we were using.
Fortunately the whole assembly was never pieced into one functional unit -- it probably would have killed someone, and then we'd have appeared in "When Machines Attack!".
True story.

Heh, could be fun like the gren-launcher in Half Life (my favorite weapon).
