Religion: People can't accept the fact that they're going to die, so they cling to an idea that tells them that they're going to live forever in some happy fantasy land, full of magic and wonder. It all starts with parents telling their kids that there is life after death (an oxymoron if I've ever heard one), and that belief being reinforced by what the rest of society tells them, plus the simple fact that believing they're never going to "really" die is much more preferable than accepting that their "soul" is nothing more than a combination of the subtle sensations produced by the movements of the organs of their body and, largely, electrical discharges within the brain. They convince themselves it's something mystical that will never die. When the kids grow up, they pass on this belief to their kids, and so on and so fourth. This "chain reaction" of wish fulfillment is the reason that 95 percent of the population is unwilling to accept reality for what it is. Simply put, God is Santa Claus for adults. Think about it.

Thoroughly enjoyable. I think. (Let me just go waste ANOTHER hour wading through this stuff and enjoying it for no reason whatsoever and I'll get back to you.) posted by Ricky_gr10 at 7:56 PM on January 24, 2007
