This is MetaFilter at its most insipid and pointless.

Does anyone get the urge with snarky comments to just shout "YOU ARE METAFILTER AT ITS MOST INSIPID AND POINTLESS." (or equivalent)

Not that that's what I think. I just think it's the only rational response.

Wolfdog: "This is MetaFilter at its most insipid and pointless."

Funny. I was about to say the same thing about your comment.

I'm sorry if I ruined your Metafilter experience, Wolfdog, by posting this video. By my count nothing had been posted to the front page for about eight hours so I thought "why not post something fun." Clearly I was wrong. Metafilter should not be fun. And worse still, I posted something terrible, the sort of thing that only a monster would post to the front page, and in doing so I ruined Metafilter for you. Maybe for everyone. Clearly this was a heinous sin. I made you click on the link. I made you click on the comments link too. Clearly, all this was a bridge too far. I understand why you'd want to say that the link was insipid and pointless. I left you no option. And by fuck I apologize for driving you to that no-man's land.

I'll try harder next time dude. I will. Maybe Bush saying Mandela was dead would have been more worthy. That's not been posted yet. That's what would've been better. Oh! Or how about OJ's lawyer being heckled on live national TV? Would that have been less insipid for you. I don't know. All I know is that I'll try harder next time man. For you. For everyone. For Metafilter.

And I hope to God that no one else posts anything insipid and pointless to the Metafilter front page again. Because I would hate it if they, like me, forced you into another thread to post your thoughts. Because that would be unfortunate. For everyone involved.

Insipid and pointless aside, this post has taught me something. The middle-aged Turtles has almost exactly the same mad crush on Batgirl that the pre-teen Turtles did.

zing.. !

Seriously, fun post. I don't know how Adam West didn't break a rib laughing at some of the lines they made him deliver.. the series was genius, in its way.

Here's another classic scene.

Now you're working toward, but still not really even close to, MetaFilter at its most defensive and hysterically exaggerated.

Any chance we could have a MetaSnark section added to the site? Then all the complaining could be kept it own area?

Wolfdog: "Now you're working toward, but still not really even close to, MetaFilter at its most defensive and hysterically exaggerated."

You are making the mistake of thinking that I actually cared about what you said; that somehow you had wounded me in some irreparable way, when in fact I was merely taking the piss at your own hysterically exaggerated take on this FPP I've created here.

Wolfdog; I love your posts. I do. They're often intellectual masturbatory wankery, but they are honestly great stuff. Clearly that is Metafilter for you but it's not Metafilter for everyone. So don't take a piss in a thread that dosen't fit your Metafilter shape because as many comments so far have indicated, sometimes a fun thread can be great around these parts, and are as far removed from the concepts of pointlessness and the definition of insipid as chalk is from cheese.

Or something. :)

criminey, this took me back...both to my childhood spent racing around in a batgirl cape and mask, and to years later when I used to catch the 5pm reruns with a group of fellow barflies at the old Albion in SF.

good times.

single link YouTube posts still seem to bring out the most fascinating collaborative contributions from subsequent commenters (miss lynnster, I'd plum forgotten the Batusi! and empath, kudos for making me choke on my bengal spice tea in response to that quote.)

One thing I love in the Batusi scene is how he says, "What's your name? You interest me... strangely." as he accepts her invitation to dance.

I really need to find an opportunity to use that someday, just to entertain myself.

Wow. Did I simply miss how completely surreal this show was when I was a kid, or is this clip exceptional?
posted by Alex404 at 8:48 AM on September 22, 2007

In my early days on the internet, I ventured into some bbs that had a collection of pornographic text files. Being all of 12 years old that seemed highly exciting. So I opened one of them that was Batman themed. It was a Batgirl/Robin/Batman scat/bondage story. Let me just say that the Batman show was never funny again. I had totally repressed these disquieting memories...

...until now. Thanks a lot, Second Account. If anybody needs me I'll rocking nervously back and forth in the corner, crying quietly.
posted by Kattullus at 9:13 AM on September 22, 2007

I'm just fascinated by the bizarre expressions on Batgirl's face throughout the scene as she seems every few moments to forget, and then go back into character. I'm not sure how to read it - she doesn't get any dialogue - it's certainly not joy or comfort but it doesn't quite read as outright annoyance either.
posted by litfit at 9:25 AM on September 22, 2007

It's not just that clip Alex...
I can't believe that anyone involved was taking it seriously, it was all so bad. If they were, by god...
posted by opsin at 9:51 AM on September 22, 2007

Just in case anyone hasn't watched it yet, further proof that Adam West remained brilliant between Batman and Family Guy: Lookwell!

It's a sitcom pilot created by Conan O'Brien & Robert Smigel featuring West as a washed-up former TV-show detective who tries to solve crimes in between giving acting seminars. Better than Andy barker, P.I. at any rate.

Does anyone know if there's some dark, nefarious reason why this show isn't out on DVD yet? Seems like a no-brainer.

I already own the movie.
posted by Cyrano at 2:12 PM on September 22, 2007

Cyrano, Warner Bros. owns Batman and Fox produced the series. As I understand it, they can't agree on a split for home video. Batman was never on VHS, either. Dastardly.

Second account, thanks for the post. To me, Batman is the greatest show in the history of television. And yes, I'm including Banacek.

Guess what I just found? Lyle Waggoner was originally tested to be Batman & they have his uber dull screen test here. The guy playing Robin SUCKED. His voice sounds just like a little girl. Wow, what a different Batman that show would've been. SO. NOT. FUNNY.

That said, if you keep watching, they include girly Robin doing an "exhibition stunt fight." Acting aside, he may have been a better fighter than Burt Ward. Well, in rooms where there are ropes hanging conveniently from the ceiling anyhow.
