I've never heard the original version, though my first ever rock concert was Powerman 5000, Static X, and Dope, the last of whom did a cover of this song.
I got all nostalgic and giggled.

That Nina Gordon version that kolophon linked is fantastic. I've had it in my MP3 player for a year or so, and whenever it comes up on random play it always gets a smile.
On more than one occasion, I've had someone in the car when it starts to play and the inevitable reaction is "What the fuck? Seriously?" posted by quin at 3:04 PM on March 18, 2008

Worth a chuckle, and I wonder how many takes it took to get it right.
I'm occasionally compelled to rewrite song lyrics on the fly, especially if a song is in heavy rotation. It's not so much for humor, as it is to get out from under the grinding repitition of it all. Especially the choruses, or sampled music. posted by BrotherCaine at 11:05 PM on March 18, 2008
