That reminded me of a computer game I played as a young art-history-nerd-in-training, Masterpiece Mansion. posted by piratebowling at 6:41 PM on December 10, 2008
Um, when does the shooting start? posted by Lukenlogs at 6:48 PM on December 10, 2008
It would have been perfect if, instead of a generic assault rifle, the "shooter" was holding a paintbrush, or a sunflower, or a severed ear. posted by KokuRyu at 6:56 PM on December 10, 2008 [2 favorites]
As an art fan I'm impressed, its the most beautiful CS map I've seen in a long time. Good enough to upgrade from a TNT card to play on. posted by Chan at 7:14 PM on December 10, 2008
This is extremely reminiscent of a scene from Chrono Cross. Think it was the "Dimensional Vortex." I don't know why I can't find any pictures online.
this has nothing to do with the in-game characters named Van and Gogh posted by grobstein at 7:21 PM on December 10, 2008

The Church at Auvers was a nice touch. But the video should have ended with a gun shot to the chest. posted by Sailormom at 7:38 PM on December 10, 2008 [1 favorite]
When I just saw the Van Gogh prints on the wall I was ready to poop on this but then it went outside and "Starry Night" was the sky and then it all made sense. posted by Burhanistan at 7:48 PM on December 10, 2008
gwint: THANK YOU. That's all kinds of amazing. posted by grubi at 8:51 PM on December 10, 2008
Bullshit mod. You should at least be able to take shots at a sycophantic Gauguin. posted by felix betachat at 8:59 PM on December 10, 2008 [4 favorites]
It was fun guessing which painting would be stepped into next. Bravo. But I agree about the weapon, that would have been the artist's ear.
I was very very mildly disappointed it didn't end in a wheat field, with crows. posted by maxwelton at 9:08 PM on December 10, 2008
I loved this. Someone recently re-texturized one of my favorite games, The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. It caused a ruckus on this one fan board, wherein one side was enthusiastic about updated graphics of backgrounds, explosions, sprites and bullets, and another side upset that it was changing the creator's original work. This argument is kind of silly, though, because ZUN (the creator of this and the other games in the series) has always been a big supporter of doujin soft - tribute games made by fans. He's good like that.
This CS retexturizing is amazing, though. EoSD is a 2D vertical scrolling shooter. I can't imagine the time entailed in a complex 3D game like this one. posted by Marisa Stole the Precious Thing at 9:57 PM on December 10, 2008
I know how incredibly nit-picky this is, but it came very close to ruining it for me at 0:14(in the Youtube video linked by archagon), when the camera panned up and you could see beyond the edge of the Starry Night painting. They should have made it so you could look straight up and never see an edge.
Still, it's very impressive overall. posted by owtytrof at 8:21 AM on December 11, 2008
This isn't just a tech demo. This is an actual playable map where one team is trying to plant a bomb. I don't remember specifics, but I've played it several times and it's a fine map.
Maybe I should do a surf map post, now. posted by jefftang at 9:09 AM on December 11, 2008

That came out likean overall negative -- I loved this. I was just expecting that as an ending, also. (and was looking forward to it -- what a vibrant painting) posted by Durn Bronzefist at 11:22 AM on December 11, 2008
I liked the idea of it but the assault rifle was a little disconcerting. I kept flinching around every corner. Not cool when you're trying to enjoy the art. posted by toastedbeagle at 1:56 PM on December 11, 2008
The guy who made these maps, NIPPER, is prolific. I don't know if any of his maps work, but there are some on his website and more at FPSBANANA.
