I would play this but there's no badges for it on Kongregate yet.

I still can't get "Get Off Your Seats". Nothing I've tried works, and I know how it's supposed to be unlocked.

Hold up. Do not let go up the up arrow. Do not move, do not die, and do not jump manually. Simply hold up.

693 seconds. Finally, I have achieved a top score among all comments in a Flash Friday thread. I guess I should be feeling accomplished, but I feel oddly like my life is wasted.

I felt like a genius when I figured out how to change my elephant's colors. This is a bad thing, eh?

Some sad small satisfaction that I knocked the poor gloating schmuck off his high horse.

I thought I'd tried that, but apparently not. Thanks!

What was everyone's second-to-last achievement?

Mine was "Cheater".
posted by Flunkie at 7:33 PM on December 19, 2008 [2 favorites]

I find it interesting how a bunch of random achievements can make an otherwise generic game totally fun. Um, this probably goes against the author's intent, but I'd love to see more games like this!

938 seconds. Second-to-last achievement was flipping through all the elephant colors rapidly.

man, i spent 407 seconds doing those 100 useless things. WHAT A HYSTERICAL EPONYM. IF ONLY THERE WERE SOME CONTRACTION FOR THIS PURPOSE.

Mine was the programmer credit. Also, I spent 1600 seconds doing this, so clearly I am not as smart as the rest of the class.

I will not post my time since it went longer than most. I will, however, say that that was a lot of good fun. While I'll agree that it was pretty meta, I enjoyed trying to figure out what you need to do to unlock stuff. The simplicity of the controls and graphics hearken back to an earlier age of video games that I appreciated.

It reminds me of an idea for a game I read on some blog wherein the major goal was to figure out just exactly what the goals and mechanics were. The author of the idea speculated that it might be too obtuse and unstructured of a gameplay concept for most players. I feel that Achievement Unlocked gets around this by giving you the names for particular goals that give just enough away to help you figure out things without being too obvious. I could see this working on the DS with one screen listing the goals and the other screen with the gameplay environment.

Is it wrong that I've played this three times already and I'm eagerly awaiting it to get badges on Kongregate?

i can't get 7 corpses
posted by Bonzai at 12:36 AM on December 20, 2008

The first 30 seconds or so of the game are hilarious. And I think I found the Cheater achievement too early. It felt like cheating.

Bonzai, try jumping up repeatedly into the moving spikes from the spawn point, with some luck or timing you'll get a corpse cascade.

Thanks for this - now I can truly appreciate what it's like to have OCD. Or be a video game tester. Or both.
posted by Graygorey at 1:05 AM on December 20, 2008

Woo. First time to figure it out, and that was fun, then second time for speed. 347 seconds! and I think I can go even quicker too....but no. I think I'm done.

Still, that was kind of awesome.

fantabulous timewaster: man, i spent 407 seconds doing those 100 useless things. WHAT A HYSTERICAL EPONYM. IF ONLY THERE WERE SOME CONTRACTION FOR THIS PURPOSE.

"Existence."

Anyone mentions the other "e" word Mr. F_T_'s referencing, I break a toe. Maybe not yours, maybe not mine, but a toe. You don't know whose. But a toe. Maybe your grandma's. Maybe your paperboy - don't you feel bad, little Timmy with a broken toe. Just don't say epoAAAAAAUUUUOWWWWW! Sonofabitch, that hurts!

Man, I love metagame nonsense like this. Also recommended: You Have to Burn the Rope (previously on MeFi).

It reminds me of an idea for a game I read on some blog wherein the major goal was to figure out just exactly what the goals and mechanics were.

Hey, that might have been my blog -- it sounds a lot like an idea I had once.

1431 seconds, and the entire time my wife was trying to figure out what the hell I was doing. Which made it funnier to me.

I played up to 70% and closed it thinking it would save my progress. It didn't. Now I'm waiting for some Kongregate badges before trying again.

It's telling that now I expect auto saving from a flash game. Things have really changed.

What up, 131 seconds. I am pathetic.

Games as commentary; in this case, the growing trend for game designers to substitute artificial and arbitrary tasks for coherent gameplay. But if players can derive self-satisfaction from things like earning badges and titles, unlocking achievements, and besting a high score or a low time, even when those have no effect on game play, it is cheap for even an otherwise good game to include those elements?

Oh, and if you're interested in doing it for speed, roughly: Visit the points in order: 314,253,012345,43210. For the first three (314), don't let yourself die so you can get the Longetivity achievement out of the way. After you hit point 4, you should have like 10-15 seconds left before you're allowed to die, at which point you can pelt out all the meta-meta-achievements. Type 1234jmtb02[up][up][down][down][left][right][left][right]ba[up+down][left+right][space] and then click anywhere in the game area, mute, quality, then hint (quickly close window). Move the scroll bar for the achievement window. It should hit the 30 second mark and give you Longetivity. After this, die early and often to speed up travel. You'll still need to get the two drop-from-top-of-roof achievements (one onto the spikes, one straight to the ground), you can do these along the way.

After you finish doing all that the only thing left to do is die. Fall into the pit until you get both the 10 bodies-in-pit and 3-simultaneous bodies in pit achievement, then throw yourself rapidly at the moving platform repeatedly until you get the 101 deaths. That should be everything.

Takes a bit of practice to do it fast and not miss anything, but it's actually pretty satisfying. My best time was 131 seconds.
