"The Journal of Urban Typographyis dedicated to the documentation and study of signs, word fragments, and typography created with utilitarian intent in urban environments."

Just a Tumblr site but interesting nontheless.

I think it would be more interesting to see a blog about public roadsigns from around the world.

It should be called the Journal of Paste-on and other Terrible Typography. Really, very, very few of these are remotely interesting from a typographical point of view.

rageagainsttherobots: Roadsigns, but probably not what you have in mind.

Has the prescriptive/descriptive debate come to typography yet?

Huh. And yet, here I am, somehow, apparently against all laws of nature, actually finding it interesting from a typographical point of view. Go figure.

Great post.

I thought many were great. Works of art on their own. On page 3-5[?], the word 'HEAT', where the top red plastic layer was peeling. Perfect.
Great shit, thanks.

I know about a dozen people who work in various area of design (mainly web design) who obsessively take photos just like this.... it's like some kind of ironic designerly stamp collecting.

Sorry about my messed up Roadsigns link above. It should go here.

As for signage, a nice collection here.

Anyone take the time to scroll down on the Assfisting typo site and see the two "I have a Drame/Draem" signs?

That is very sad.

If you like this, you might also enjoy some of the papers given at the Friends of St Bride Printing Library annual conference, including Street vernacular typography in post-war Beirut, Make do and mend: temporary typographies of Moscow, and (my personal favourite) Lettering on wheelie bins.

I always see that "Bruder + Co" sign on this white truck that seems to be everywhere -- it's the first thing that I thought about, and here it is!

This looks like a piece by Christopher Wool.

I took this image a while back, and thought it was absolutely amazing.
