I lived in West LA in the 80s but that was before my inner Homo Economicus was awakened, so I didn't really understand the capital flows swirling all around me. I saw all the beemers and palatial mansions up in the hills but I didn't make the connection between all that and the billions of movie tickets and TV viewer eyeballs delivered to advertisers from whence much of this physical wealth was ultimately drawn from.
Movies are a curious business. In the 80s it almost looked like arcade games were going to eclipse them, now it looks like it'll be video games, even though industry sales are down 30% YOY. posted by @troy at 8:47 PM on August 18, 2009
[Piranha II] was to be produced on Jamaica, but when Cameron arrived at the studio, he discovered his crew was comprised primarily of Italians who spoke no English and the project was under financed. Under duress, Cameron says he had a nightmare about an invisible robot hit man sent from the future to kill him, giving him the idea for The Terminator, which would later catapult his filming career. posted by @troy at 8:53 PM on August 18, 2009 [2 favorites]
Cameron's kind of notorious for abusing his body on-set. He was giving himself B-12 injections on Titanic to keep going.
(Mr. F was at Digital Domain for post on that. When Jim hit the hallways, people stood aside to let the man pass, like it was the military.) posted by fairytale of los angeles at 10:03 PM on August 18, 2009

...and that robot hitman was HARLAN ELLISON!
(Even though neither Soldier or Demon with a glass hand sound particularly like The Terminator to me) posted by Artw at 10:14 PM on August 18, 2009
