I'd generally say Chaotic Neutral would be the way I'd like to see Doctor Who- a strong alignment implies interference.

I'd tend to agree, but have a hard time complaining about most of the positioning except for Colin Baker and Tennant, but that's just because it's hard to shoehorn "evil" into any Doctor except arguably McCoy.
posted by Shepherd at 11:13 AM on March 11, 2010

This would be more interesting if there was an explanation of which person is in which picture. I fully intend to see more of this series soon, but the only one I recognize is "Chaotic Good" (Tom Baker I am guessing).

Had I ever been pressed to answer (under oath, to get a job, you know, whatever), I would have guessed that I could be identified as Chaotic Neutral.

Glad to see I'm in good company.

I'll give you the latter, dunno about the former. The dude DOES have several genocides under his belt/burns at the center of time/looks good in suits/etc.

I'm glad to see in this thread one my newest rules for life: If something exists, but you're not quite sure when it means, but you feel like it's something you really should know what it means, you can probably find your answer on tvtropes.org.

If I hadn't pretty much banned myself from Gallifrey Base and most all other online forms of fandom, I'd love to throw this graphic up in a thread and see what sort of havoc/shit stirring it would cause.

But when it comes to stuff like that, I've always been so Chaotic Neutral they had to exile me to an alternate universe with the Tylers to prevent further (justified) genocides.

Given all his do-gooder roles (Campion, Davies, etc) I suspect Peter Davidson fights crime as a matter of habit now.

And after he returns the purse to its rightful owner, he smiles shyly at a camera that isn't there.

Apparrantly I have a bad memory: When did Tenant's doctor drown children and put people into an eternal prison (although I recall that he wanted to do this to the Master after destroying the paradox engine)?

In "The Runaway Bride", he drops the entirety of the Thames River on a bunch of spider-monster children that were gestating in the Earth's core. While his companion and the monster's mom were screaming at him to stop. That was the end of that particular race!

At the end of "The Family of Blood" he metes out the following eternal imprisonments to said family:

- Father: Wrapped in chains forged from a compressed dwarf star
- Mother: Thrown from the TARDIS into the event horizon of a black hole, never to move
- Daughter: Trapped in a mirror (caveat: ALL mirrors)
- Son: Frozen in time and left as a scarecrow in a British field
- Me: Exposed as a huge dorkus. Just now.

If you were Chaotic Neutral and pressed to answer under oath for a job, you'd probably want to answer Neutral Good. Unless it was a government job, then you could say Lawful Neutral. You know, whatever gets you the best pay grade, really.

#5 Peter Davison....|..#2 Patrick Troughton..|...............#4 Tom Baker
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
#3 Jon Pertwee......|...#1 William Hartnell..|...#9 Christopher Eccleston
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
#7 Sylvester McCoy..|.....#6 Colin Baker.....|..........#10 David Tennant

I thought Matt #11 Smith looked like the son of Bill Nye the Science Guy (which is a smart look for a youthful Doctor) but looking at the recent clips and photos, it appeared they have given him Conan's Hair! (In a much less bright color; if it were red, NBC would probably sue).

Still, Original Doctor Troughton is so much more Neutral Evil than True Neutral, and Colin B.'s outfit was 100% Chaotic, but I can't get them to line up in a proper grid...

You know I pretty much completely agree that Tennant's Doctor, while certainly up there with Tom Baker and Ecclestone in my all-time top three, is also deeply scary in a "Am I dreaming or did Obama really just extend the PATRIOT Act?"* kinda way.

And here is one of the greatest fanvids of all time** to explain exactly why. Mefites I give you:

* Sadly not dreaming.

(Yes, I love Colin Baker and no, I'm not ashamed to say it.)

((I hate Tom Baker, too.))
posted by elsietheeel at 4:38 PM on March 11, 2010

I also loved Colin Baker's portrayal, though he certainly was stuck with some horrid scriptwriting that extended into the beginning of Sylvester McCoy's run. Hell, anything involving Mel as a companion is something I automatically file under horrid, as I would file her TV role as being one of the worst companions ever. I have heard from others who know that Mel's character redeems herself somewhat in the books and audio programs; at the same time, the Eighth Doctor's depiction in these same media would put him somewhere between Neutral and Lawful Good.

It was revealed in a pretty obvious manner (I can't remember which season or if it was a special) that the 'Face of Bo' is a character from the spinoff, Torchwood...

(great googley moogly!, there appears there's a US version of Torchwood being talked about... I wonder what they'll think the equivalent of Cardiff/Wales in the 'states is. Hoboken, NJ? Des Moines, IA?)

davros42: “You bite your tongue! Mind Robbers is solid gold. War Games is ok too, if about 4-5 parts too long.”

I've tried, believe me - although I've never tried Mind Robbers, so I'll attempt it this weekend in your honor. It's just so hard for me to watch those Troughton years without feeling like I'm watching cheesy 60s sci-fi, y'know? And so much of it is so... mindless.

Of course, I'm a guy who's still bitter that they fired William Hartnell, and it's been what - 45 years? Hartnell was one of the best Doctors there have ever been, supremely underrated, and awesomely scary at times. This chart actually nails him nicely - the moments when he's a villain occur very frequently, and it was often hard to tell whether he gave a shit if anybody else survived. The Edge Of Destruction might well be my favorite Who ever.
