Precious Moments figurines updated for the hipster set.
Ah, yes, that particular brand of hipster known as the Comic Book Nerd. posted by Sys Rq at 11:36 AM on June 10, 2010 [3 favorites]
If by cute you mean creepy, then yes. posted by OmieWise at 11:38 AM on June 10, 2010
Why do they all look so disappointed in me?
Because they know what you did, Think_Long. They won't tell, but they know. posted by griphus at 11:39 AM on June 10, 2010
You know whats kind of awesome and actually for kids? The DC Kids stuff, particularly Superfreinds and Batman: Brave and the Bold. The Tiny Titans one or whatever it is I can do without. posted by Artw at 11:39 AM on June 10, 2010
Aw. I like the Hulk one! posted by Greg Nog at 11:43 AM on June 10, 2010
That's one of the creepiest drawings of The Joker I've ever seen. posted by The Card Cheat at 11:47 AM on June 10, 2010
Dude, that's blood on Harley Quinn's hammer. That's not a "cute" smile, that's a "Pet Semetary 'I just played with Mommy and now I want to play with youuuuu' smile." posted by Mooski at 11:50 AM on June 10, 2010

Oh man, Artw, I misread your comment initially, and thought you were insulting Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I'm glad I reread it, because it was pistols at dawn there for a second. posted by maqsarian at 11:55 AM on June 10, 2010
Well, it is described as a severe case of cute.
Tiny Titans and Mini Marvels are merely onset cases of cute. Luckily the cute hasn't metastasized. posted by redsparkler at 11:57 AM on June 10, 2010
Well, it is described as a severe case of cute.
More like a case of sever cute. As in "if you don't think they are cute, they will come to your house in the middle of the night and sever something that you wish that they wouldn't." posted by GenjiandProust at 12:02 PM on June 10, 2010
This style is reminiscent of "chibi" style from anime. Aggressively cute, chibi manages to be endearing enough to be nauseating. posted by hellojed at 12:04 PM on June 10, 2010
The Card Cheat: That's one of the creepiest drawings of The Joker I've ever seen.
No shit. Even the 60s TV camp Batman one is pretty terrifying if you look at him, as are all Jokers, but this Joker is particularly nightmare inducing.
I don't know that you could ever have a "cute Joker" -- maybe Heath Ledger after he washed his makeup off, but that's about all I can think of. posted by MCMikeNamara at 12:07 PM on June 10, 2010
Some of those are very very good, and some of them are great. The Hulk is great. Joker is great. The TMNT one is kind of great. Being able to see one of Scarecrow's eyes moves that one from good to great. It's kind of stunning how perfectly they capture the character of the Penguin and Mr. Freeze (which: for the most part, who cares about Mr. Freeze?). But why does Wonder Woman look like a mystically animated hell-doll? posted by penduluum at 12:10 PM on June 10, 2010
as if Jhonen Vasquez and Skottie Young were collaborating
I haven't read any artists' statements on these, but it seems to me like these are aiming more at creepy than at cute, by subverting our expectations of characters/images with baby-like characteristics.
With the exception of The Hulk, there, all those renderings seemed to me like no effort had been made to infantilize the motivations and desires of the characters along with their appearance; they might *look* cute, at first glance and in an innocuous moment, but they certainly don't *act* cute. Kids 'wise beyond their years', especially taken to this extent, are always creepy and more than a little sad. posted by Fraxas at 12:22 PM on June 10, 2010
Superheroes, super-deformed. Throw in some shiny disk eyes like tiny gateways to dimensions where the deadlights glow like sick lanterns, and you get super-creepy Superfriends. posted by adipocere at 12:50 PM on June 10, 2010
Aw come on, the one of Hellboy with the birds? Now that's cute. posted by Splunge at 2:03 PM on June 10, 2010 [1 favorite]
This is pretty good but (despite what Artw says) I'm gonna have to go with Tiny Titans in this category
BATMAN: BRAVE AND THE BOLD is pretty much the best thing with 'DC' on it these days, though posted by jtron at 2:13 PM on June 10, 2010
Futurama characters as X-Men
Sometimes I get a little nervous that I can be so easily manipulated just based on surface-level recognition of pop-cultural things I enjoy. Other times, I'm more like
How can Nibbler as Lockheed?! Malfunctioning Eddie as Warlock?!
Okay, I'm sold. posted by elr at 2:29 PM on June 10, 2010

My 3 1/2 year old has rejected Tiny Titans as too babyish, and is all about the Brave and Bold. make of that what you will. posted by Artw at 2:35 PM on June 10, 2010
Obviously the dystopian 2000AD-influenced weltanschauung prevalent in the Artw household has jaded his 3 1/2 year old soul. It's encouraging to see he still has the good taste to enjoy BBATB, though ;) I kid, I kid; it's just that I've gone so far over the mature/deep/gritty line that I've come out straight through the other side. Coincidentally I had a Facebook friend request today from Yo Gabba Gabba... hmmm... posted by jtron at 2:53 PM on June 10, 2010
Her soul. And hey, she likes the Super Freinds comic almost as much, which I guess is a happy medium (I have warnings from her mum not to openly mock Aquaman's non-contributions quite so much when reading them to her, though).
And though I don't really show her the 2000ad stuff, when she has seen it she calls Judge Dredd "Spiderman".
Sigh... I'm probably going to start having to lock all my non-3-year-old-freindly comics away somewhere now she's started on this. posted by Artw at 3:09 PM on June 10, 2010
Wonder Woman looks like a zombie to me. Some of the others do too, but it was really strong with both her image in the group at the top and her solo piece.
I liked the Penguin and the Scarecrow, but they're not cute. posted by immlass at 3:29 PM on June 10, 2010

I make that your 3 1/2 year old is an awesome badness.
So glad to see that the Futurama X was posted here too. Saw it earlier, thought about it as an FPP, thought about adding it here, and never got around to it.
