On the west coast of Ireland, in a little town called Doolin near the Cliffs of Moher, there's a pub with of every inch of wall covered by police patches from all over the world. posted by dry white toast at 7:17 AM on August 25, 2010
This is nice, but I wish there were some way to get people to stop using "K9" as a synonym for "canine." It's like saying "Sgt. Smith works in the H8 crimes division." Yes, it's witty, but maybe it doesn't have to get used all the time. posted by LastOfHisKind at 7:37 AM on August 25, 2010
Yeah, what's the deal with the K-9 label? Was it originally just a preemptive move to give the dog handlers a "cool" tag so they wouldn't worry about being mocked by their colleagues as the Puppy Patrol? posted by a small part of the world at 7:46 AM on August 25, 2010
This is awesome!
A few years ago, I made a quilt for my best friend with lots of embroidered squares. For some squares, I was lazy and just ordered patches off of eBay. She kind of has a thing for men in uniform so I looked for police patches from everywhere she's lived.
They were so cool that I started ordering some for my own quilt (a work in progress). Some fire department patches were pretty crazy too -- they seem to like Hell imagery. posted by Toothless Willy at 7:47 AM on August 25, 2010

I suspect it's from when DC was the leading US city by per-capita homicide rates. Ah, yes, 2003 it was. It lost the dubious honor to Camden or something the next year, IIRC, so it would have had to have been made during a relatively short period. posted by Kadin2048 at 8:46 AM on August 25, 2010
