Gossip can be fun, but that site is (was?) just mean-spirited.

"Amanda, if you're reading this, you're the most irritating skank i've ever had the pleasure of experiencing online, if given the chance I'd beat you over the head with a shovel." "FrostyFx, who once claimed to be bullimic (sure fatty) on her site, is no different... Perhaps she'll lose some weight and meet a real man instead of having to resort to an internet boyfriend." "The queen of nasty canadian dykes is throwing a tizzy because her "boobs" have shown up on another popular website..."

Picking on individuals in a forum where they don't have the opportunity to defend themselves is not only uncool, it's quite possibly libel.

Suprfli, I would like to thank you for knocking about 10 points off my IQ by posting that link.

Who are all those people?

seems more like gossip in the teen domain scene, which is it's own seperate genre of weblogging than what most of us are involved with...

E/N boys ripping on cam girls, cruelty and immaturity all around. Just like high school, but without the learning part.

This is what happens when the net become popular to accomodate the 'non-geeks'.

that's about as useless and without merit as the swill shoveled daily at the fucked company message boards.

and *these* nuggets of eloquence were started by pud himself:

Maybe I'm getting too old, or maybe I'm just not "cool" or "down" with "the scene", but what the hell is E/N?

Internet Gossip is the new playground of the net. Humorous articles written to irritate even the calmest person. Go with a sense of humor, if you lack this don't criticize...you were warned. I wish my site was like this *sigh*. Piggy rules!!!! :-P

I had no idea, either. Here's a definition from an E/N webring:

What's an 'Everything/Nothing' or 'E/N' website? Really, it's whatever the person responsible for it wants it to be. They are usually journalesque pages with the thoughts and ideas of the creators on any and every topic.

SiW -- I was stumped too. Perhaps this is the answer?

I went with a sense of humor. I am inclined to like anyone named Piggy. I was not offended. But I guess I'm not 13 anymore, because this just bored me. This is just some idiot's site who talks about some other idiots in an inbred little world. Worst of all, it's not even the same inbred little world that we're used to here so the lameness and unnewsworthiness of it sticks out like a sore thumb. Next!
posted by beefula at 12:33 PM on September 4, 2001

well then: the pretense thereof, at least!

---also I must wonder why it's never that something is *just not funny*, it's that the person failing to be amused has *no sense of humor*.

Stuff like this makes me pine for A-list pissing contests.
posted by holgate at 12:53 PM on September 4, 2001

it's like being in an alternate world, with completely different A-listers.

One man's A-lister is another man's hack.
posted by Steven Den Beste at 2:20 PM on September 4, 2001

OK, just to make sure I'm understanding the general consensus here:

Webloggers being terribly self-obsessed, overly analytical, and gazing at each other's navels: perfectly normal standard discourse.

"E/N site" webmasters being terribly self-obsessed, overly analytical, and gazing at each other's navels: immature prats waste everybody's time and energy.

Got it. I'll make sure to update my MeFi handbook accordingly.
posted by youhas at 2:45 PM on September 4, 2001

right youhas, you got it, exactly! that's what i said, and i wasn't being ironic at all when i said it. So yup, you got it right, dead-on!
posted by beefula at 2:50 PM on September 4, 2001

simple formula.

E/N = blog + cam portals with underage cam girls + fan porn/ amateur porn + gore/revolting pictures + general oddness + melrose place-esque antics + a.d.d./hyperactivity + spending at least 8 hours a day in front of a computer working on your site and gossiping

4 out of the 8 will put you into the E/N category.
6 out of the 8 puts you in the 'in crowd.'
8 out of 8 makes you an a-lister.

if you have an ars or any other adult revenue service banner, add half a point.

also, take the E/N webmasters' real age. subtract 5 years. every day, throw them into a virtual pit of 15,000 corn chips. the corn chips = unique visitors. they are all fighting over the corn chips. they will form small gangs to fight for the corn chips. corn chips are gold.

E/N posts are not "personal" or "bloggy" [i.e. "i ate cheerios for breakfast today. i like cheerios; they remind me of my childhood."], they are "newsy" or "commentish." the exception to this rule is if the webmaster has had sex. if the webmaster has had sex with another E/N webmaster, then expect to see a week's worth of "we had sex" posts. i'm not kidding.

finally, gratuitous linking to other E/N webmasters is rampant. remember, form gangs to snag the corn chips!

there ya go.

bleh. e/n is just bad news. i'd say more, but I NEED TO UPDATE MY BLOGGER WITH AUTOPSY PHOTOS.

*thunk*

where was i?

i think that if Internet Gossip hangs in there, it has a chance to actually fill in a niche that no one really thought was out there - commenting on the personalities that are emerging in the blog - E/N culture-thing.

or at least it will tell us what sites are halfway decent.
posted by tsarfan at 5:11 PM on September 4, 2001

beefula: No, I caught your irony. I was just reiterating the same point you made, but with less wit. I have an axe to grind, that's all. Sorry.

I would apologize more profusely, but the teeming masses need to know about my Cheerio nostalgia posthaste. You know how it goes. :-)

e/n did not begin with Stile Project. just b/c he has porn and core and cam girls, it doesn't mean that's what e/n originally was. here's a history by bret: neoflux.com
posted by red scare at 9:34 PM on September 4, 2001

sometimes you can tell if you'll like a site just by the design.

yikes. the further I got, the sorrier I was.
posted by aflakete at 10:18 PM on September 4, 2001

Again, if you've just now learned of these people - you've got no business commenting on the community.

whoops...

i'm still kind of confused as to what e/n is... the neoflux definition barely helped, as it's a little broad. hell, when you put it that way, my site is e/n....

and out of curiosity... with a lot of the cam girls who are displaying themselves being underage... is that legal?
posted by lotsofno at 12:57 AM on September 5, 2001

i was just being facetious with my definition. don't take anything i say seriously. of course, i am finding that people on this site take things just a tad too seriously, but that's just my worthless opinion.
posted by notoriousbhc at 6:53 AM on September 5, 2001

The definition is broad because it needs to be to avoid excluding people who consider themselves part of the genre. Its alot like trying to define the differences between a journal and a blog - thy are definately different, but there's so much overlap between the two that the differences aren't of much consequence.

Generally, E/N sites are identical to blogs, but operated by a slightly younger, more male dominated crowd. They tend to be a bit less personal than weblogs and will often have multiple contributors to the site, whereas blogs tend to be more singular.

Of course, not every E/N site fits that mold - not even mine [site has a female contributor and I'm 29].
posted by schlyer at 7:13 AM on September 5, 2001

notoriousbhc: you may have been being facetious, but damn if you weren't more or less spot on. It's at least as valid as saying that all 'blogs' are about the Cheerios their owners ate for breakfast.
posted by Sapphireblue at 3:02 PM on September 5, 2001

i didnt read a lot of the site because its lunch time and i am feeling lazy, but what i did read wasnt too bad - but half the people that were written about i didnt even know....its like this whole loop i have missed out on....typical...
