A new concept in blogging: Can't think of anything to say? What the hell, just borrow someone else's life.

Actually, I find it a good idea. Taken out of context, the entries are often funny, and the blog has highlighted more unknown (to me) blogs than any other. The concept of meta-weblogs that highlight quality or interesting stuff like this hasn't really been explored.

Actually, I think it's a great approach - I was just being more ambiguous with my headline than I should've. The blogger isn't pretending to do anything else than, er, borrow, so why not?

Looks almost like a sort of cut-up weblog. The next step is to automatically pull random excerpts from people's weblogs.

I like it too. Erik made a different sort of "cut-up" blog-- but with journal entries-- at his Tower Of Babble.

I don't think random would work nearly as well. It might have the same disjointed effect, of course, but it wouldn't be nearly as interesting. Wouldn't have the "poot" and "i shot myself" entries, for example.

I think that a blog composed of other sites' marketing copy would be even better.

Nader Nader Nader!

Marketing Blog? How about this for entry #1

"P2P computing is a significant technological macroforce, and at Viant we specialize in sorting out the sustainable benefits surrounding such macroforces. Groove provides a compelling implementation of a platform enabling creation of '3c applications' (control, collaboration, and contribution) in a business context. This will be the key to creating innovative business practices leading to sustainable competitive advantage."

just out of curiosity, is the original blogger asked or is this copyright violation?

Excerpts are fair use.

It's hardly a "new" concept in weblogging.

I would have expected our crazy uncle joe, who is undoubtably the expert in meta-blogs, to provide this history, but it looks like I'll have to make do.

The late *logspotting is the first I can remember to do this explicitly. It had a pretty clear agenda to point out idiotic and ridiculous things said on weblogs. It was a riot, from what I can remember.

Later, there was the more serious weblog nation from jjg which I think was a sincere attempt to highlight exemplary weblog entries. I remember it being rather boring.

Both just sort of died out without explanation.

Well, it's sorta kinda just a blog with bigger pull quotes than most.

And no editorial.

Much closer to the concept "pre-surf" than most current weblogs seem to be today.

Is anyone (other than me) doing a parody blog?
posted by davidgentle at 1:31 PM on October 26, 2000

Nope.
I stick to mocking.
Apologies for not jumping in sooner (I did blog this thread, so it's not like I ignored it), but I wanted to see how it would play out. Early on (around the time of logspotting, although I don't recall if they were the catalyst) there was quite a little tempest about doing big pull quotes with no content - the quotees were a bit put off that they were doing all the work, and someone else was getting all the hits ('cause going to concentrated goodness is better than having to hunt for it) - the difference may have been the rather spotty attributions that went on at the time, or maybe it's that people don't get as emotional over it all or maybe I've been at work too many hours and my brain is fused so I'm just rambling an incoherent stream of thought that makes no sense to anyone, not even me or maybe it will and it'll get cut-and-paste blogged by the guy we were talking about.. What were we talking about?

Explanation for Adam: I thought it was boring too.
