there's no place like home unless you haven't gone one
I'm looking for comforting words and concrete advice on going through the growing pains of finding where I belong. Of course there are special snowflake details.
Help me overcome my mental block: cooking edition
I have a major aversion to cooking, at least as an all-the-time thing. Is it possible to change this?
Can you teach me how to winter?
I've spent my entire life (with little exception) between Houston and Atlanta, latitudinally speaking, and moved to Seattle this summer. I don't really know what I'm supposed to be wearing to best handle the winter.
Gaming without the grind?
I've got a long-running itch to play video games. They're insufficiently like work (relative to my other hobbies) that they're an appealing way to decompress, and I can do them when it's cold/wet/dark... but I am absolutely not motivated by the grind. Help me find something that will absolutely not require collecting all/some/the last/the only McGuffin(s).
Best Pad Thai in Boston/Somerville/Cambridge
I've had a lot of pad thai around here, and pretty much all of it has been mediocre - kind of bland and flavorless. In comparison, I've had mind-meltingly delicious pad thai in Thailand (Chiang Mai and Koh Tao) that was bursting with sweet and sour and salty flavors all at once. I particularly remember the sweet cane sugar mixing with the sour tamarind in an intense, lovely way. Where can I get really really good, authentic pad thai in the Boston area? Ideally that would deliver to Davis Square.
Looking for a barely-remembered surreal webcomic
I'm looking for a surreal webcomic that I stumbled on a few years ago that I can now barely remember, so this is probably a long shot. I only remember one strip specifically, in which there was a (possibly levitating) goat/animal that suddenly spoke in Japanese, and one of the other characters (maybe a talking mountain?) said something like, "Oh, levitating goat only speaks in Japanese now." Much of the humor was similarly surreal and odd. It was drawn in black and white and most (all?) of the strips were three or four panels long. Thanks, MeFi!
Second Wave feminist SF
Janus was nominated for three “Best Fanzine” Hugos in 1978, 1979 and 1980. Jeanne Gomoll was nominated for two “Best Fan Artist” Hugos in 1978 and 1980. Janus and Aurora were the most prominent feminist science fiction fanzines of their time. With the exception of Amanda Bankier’s fanzine, The Witch and the Chameleon, which ceased publication in 1976, Janus and Aurora were the ONLY fanzines with this focus. The full archives of Janus & Aurora, the feminist science fiction fanzine created by the people who went on to create Wiscon, the feminist sf convention.
NaNoWriMo 2014 - We're Storming the Bastille - Are You Ready?
Calling all writers and non-writers, whether you are a plotter, pantser, or anything in-between - NaNoWriMo 2014 starts in 8 days, the forums have been wiped (well, sorta) and people are prepping and fretting and tuning up their writing engines. Is anyone taking part this year? If so, good luck.
Inclusiveness and Diversity in Games
Help me understand how to make trans-inclusive games.
I can has engineer-mind?
Any good books to help develop an analytic mind?
Seeking news and resources about homelessness
I'm looking for relevant and frequently updated sources of news (preferably online) about homelessness and related issues: poverty, supportive housing, etc.

Advice for a 25 year old feeling lost?
I'm not sure how to ask this question. I've been in a weird funk lately where I've been feeling lonely and frustrated due to many factors. I guess I am just having a quarter life crisis in that I am 25 and feel a little lost professionally and personally.
Path to better self-esteem
Has anyone here genuinely moved from a sense of low self-esteem to a sense of high-self esteem? How did you do it?
Who's writing about video games?
I'd like to learn more about video and digital games. I don't know where to start. I'm thinking--there must be bloggers, games writers, etc. who are writing about both classic video games and new releases? Who are they?
Coding Bootcamps and Career-Switching and Admissions Strategies, Oh My!
I'm starting to seriously plan for a career-switch to programming, going the Coding Bootcamp route as a way to jump-start my skills, my portfolio and my networking. I want advice on how best to prepare and what to expect. Snowflakes, as always, inside.
iPhone game like A Dark Room, but...not A Dark Room?
I’m looking for a game, playable on my iPhone, with probably crazy specific requirements. I fell in love with and completed (twice, once with huts and once without) A Dark Room. If I could erase my memory of playing that game and do it again, that’s basically what I’m after.
Freeform Narrative Gaming Ideas
What are your favorite tabletop and board games that exist to encourage free-form narrative play with a minimum of mechanics? I know about Fate, and I like it, but I'm trying to expand a bit. I'm asking because I've become curious about narrative gaming recently, and I'm looking for inspiration from a variety of sources. Also, any books or guides to writing things like Fate scenarios (or similarly open player lead experiences) would be greatly appreciated.
How do I look after my bike?
I recently bought a new hybrid bike which I will be using regularly for leisure rides. What do I need to know about basic maintenance (cleaning, lube, degreasing etc) to keep it in best shape.
Impossible question: Can you identify this portion of an album cover?
When I launched Upcoming.org in 2003, I clipped this little piece of red texture from a vinyl album cover and used it as the header background. I'm pretty sure that the light bands are guitar strings, and I thought it was a Frank Zappa cover, but I can't find anything that fits. Can you identify it, or am I sunk?
How to talk good on the radio?–Speech exercises for average voices?
Speech therapists/radio presenters: I may have to do some podcast-type stuff for work. I don't have a great radio voice. It's thin and slightly regionally accented, and I talk quickly, mumble and (soberly) slur words a bunch. With attention and concentration I can correct these faults up to "average" level; but I'd like to be good at radio/podcast presentation. What further steps should I take?
ISO the Mexican Pixies
If you liked rock/punk music and you lived in Mexico in the late '80s and early '90s, what Mexican bands did you like?
Where are all the Zine-sters?
I've been working on a few different zines myself, but I'd love to find more zine community online. What are some of the best sites, communities, blogs, Tumblrs, Twitter accounts, for getting into zine communities?
Hello Moon. What do I call you?
What's this illusion called? The full moon is rising, but has not yet cleared the horizon. The bottom of the moon, however, appears concave, its outer edges bending up from the horizon. (Image link inside illustrating this concept).
How do I talk to my girlfriend about occasional crossdressing?
I'm a 30-ish heterosexual cis-male in a long-term relationship with an awesome woman. We've been together for about four years, have lived together for about three of those and I think we're both pretty happy with it. I want to talk to her about the fact that I sometimes like to dress in women's clothing and would like to get your opinions on how to approach that conversation. Snowflakey details inside.
help me find a forgotten music blog/journal
I am trying to find an obscure longform music journal/website I saw months ago and can't remember enough about it, help?
Books/philosophical readings that have made an impact on your life
I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my life. This New Year's has been an introspective one for me, and has had me really contemplating my life's purpose - what I have accomplished thus far, and what I wish to accomplish from this point on. I've been doing some reading on the importance of finding and nurturing a purpose in one's life, which has certainly made a positive impact on my overall attitude and outlook. I want to discover more standouts from any genre - self-help, goal-setting, philosophical or otherwise - that have helped you, my fellow mefites, see the world and your respective circumstances in in a different, more positive light.
Where can I get a jacket like Kim's blue one from Freaks and Geeks?
Where can I get a jacket like Kim's blue one from Freaks and Geeks? Hopefully you've seen the show. If not, I'm not quite sure how to link to the google image results from my phone but it should come up quickly. It's worn by the character Kim played by Busy Phillips. I believe on the show she stole the jacket to get it. You know the one - blue with some stripes.
Needs More Personality
As I'm edging closer to middle age, I am struck by how little I know myself. Occasionally I am asked to talk or write about myself (mainly for work purposes) and I have no idea what to say. I am fairly aware of my range of skills, but I have very little insight as to my personality traits. I have done the Myer-Briggs test, read several books and completed various career assessments, but I still struggle to define who I am.
More details inside - but in short: how do others define and describe themselves? How do you become aware of yourself? Think more pragmatic/philosophical descriptions of your personality traits and less about CV bloats.
Take a ride on the underground
Are there public passageways in NYC that allow you to walk long distances either underground or otherwise shielded from the elements?
Resources on Alan Moore's process
I couldn't find any information as to how Alan Moore goes about writing his comics (namely Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and From Hell). I found an excerpt from his Watchmen script which shows how incredibly detailed he is in describing each panel. I once read that on Watchmen, it was a back-and-forth between him and Dave Gibbons, where Gibbons starts off with roughly sketching out the panels, gets comments from Moore, gets greenlit, then proceeds to drawing the final version. Any more information on Moore's process? Any other scripts you know of and is his writing as detailed for all his projects as detailed (I know that From Hell has labyrinthine appendices that almost match the work itself in length for example)?
What to do about significant other's unstable brother?
My partner's brother, after a lifetime of instability, seems to be getting worse and has recently made threats against my partner and one of the parents. My partner and the parent don't seem that worried; I take this very seriously. What can I do?

Here's your, uh, roll-thing.
I just started working as a waitress at a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles. I am overwhelmed by the menu and the cultural differences with the rest of the staff. What are some good place to look for information on Japanese food, specifically sushi? And what are some strategies to help me fit in and go with the flow as the only non-Japanese speaking person in the front of the house?
Two tickets to paradise, please!
What do you and your SO do to bond with each other?
I am not a special snowflake!
Can you suggest some kick-ass female career/life role models for this social-sciences loving, radical left-leaning, and possibly autistic, woman? I need to read about other people who have been successful in the areas I've struggled in. Not Temple Grandin, please. Many snowflakes inside.
Looking for readings to impart a sense of current academic urban studies
Long-term, I'm thinking of going back to grad school but I'm unsure what subject I'd want to do it in. In parallel, I simply have an itch to know more about urban studies that I'd like to scratch. Given this is a long-term goal, I thought it would be nice to get to the point where I am at least quasi-fluent in modern urban studies. I'm looking for any suggestions towards this end, though I was thinking about just compiling a list of influential works and papers, read those, then follow any particularly intriguing citations and so on. My goal is to at least have a critical (ideally not shallow but not super deep) understand at the level of a masters student, let's say.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Help me make better day-to-day impression with the small things
So this last week I've started realizing I care more about my... appearance? Demeanor? Presentation? Than I have in the past. I suddenly have motivation to kind of get my act together and act like a grown-up, I guess. What do you do, or see people do, that makes that impression on you?
Does ambivalence in a relationship = no go?
How do you deal with intense ambivalent feelings in a relationship, especially when they may be colored by a mood disorder?
Immediate depression coping strategies
I'm feeling really lonely and depressed. My normal coping strategies either aren't cutting it this time or aren't immediate enough. What are some different ideas?
The Games People Play
What "games" do you play to boost your mood or help you see things in a different light?
This book made you love books, right?
I'm looking for a book that is so wonderful it will renew my joy for reading. Books that don't make you want to sit in a library and luxuriate in the ability to absorb impossibly lovely stories need not apply.
