MeFi post: Codename: DROPMIRE
So perhaps you'll understand my position a bit better when I suggest that when people have the ability to read each other's mail, it makes it much more likely that they can continue to act like gentlemen?

Doubtful. It's a well-known and long studied reality of human psychology that human beings need privacy--and yes, even personal secrets--to have a healthy, stable identity and social life (one cite but there are plenty of others even the most... [more]

To anyone who reads about the intelligence "game" literally nothing about his revelations has been a surprise at all.

Plausible deniability is a thing. There is a difference between people knowing things and people knowing that you know things and so on. It's out there and everyone knows that everyone knows about it, so it needs to be discussed in the open finally.

In your personal life do you:

1. Install spyware on the computers of every enemy, rival, friend, and loved one you visit...if you can get away with it.

2. Find that your use of spyware should be judiciously limited to your enemies and rivals who are a serious threat to you.

3. Only use it in cases where you have legitimate access to the target, such as a computer shared by a couple during a divorce.... [more]

That's $21,000 more that can go to executive perks and bonuses, man

Why do I have the feeling their thinking is going to be something like, "Brilliant -- we just saved ourselves $21k per year. Let's award ourselves $100k for being so clever!"

Companies and card issuers, which include Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup, say the cards are cheaper and more efficient than checks — a calculator on Visa’s Web site estimates that a company with 500 workers could save $21,000 a year by switching from checks to payroll cards.

The cards are cheaper than traditional check/direct deposit payroll because they pass the cost of doing business onto the employees. Gross.

It's OK when say, China spies on the US, but evil when the US spies in other countries.

There once was a time when the United States aspired to be better than a communist dictatorship.

I keep hearing that there's no practical way to search through all of this acquired data. That's fundamentally wrong - the reason why the tech is available to store all of that stuff is that the software required to analyze it - all of it - has been keeping pace.

Big Data is everywhere in the enterprise right now, and there's a hell of a lot of money and manpower going into it - this is because it helps huge companies focus their marketing and product positioning.... [more]

I don't understand the real-politick "why should we be surprised by this?" response.

The response seems rather naive, in that it assumes the European countries are actually surprised. If you want to go down the real-politick rabbit hole, you have to go the whole way. Of course the US is spying on the EU, and vice versa. They all know that, and this is all Kabuki. But it's diplomacy Kabuki: we all knew the Emperor had no clothes, but once someone points it... Everyone remembers Joffrey's name. It's a perfectly hatable name for a perfectly hatable character. I mean, just look at it. There's no way to read that sequence of letters and not want to have Peter Dinklage slap its bearer.

MeFi post: Promoting A Record Using Vinyl, A box, and A Smart Phone
So it begs the question: if a song starts out as a digital file, why does it sound so much better after being made into vinyl?

Look, I don't doubt this Kevin guy's got some good ears, but:

1) I'll be a lot more interested in what he thinks if he comes to the same conclusion after running some double-blind trials, and

2) If he can put it all together in a longer, more coherent form than a series of... [more]

Hodor is actually named Walder. There are at least 4 of those that I can think of, offhand.

*applauds the subtle sally*

All 6,000 of Walder Frey's children are a Walder or Walda. Maybe like two aren't. Maybe there's like one Jim and one Helen amidst the legion of Walders. Definitely there is exactly one Waldo Frey but good luck finding him.

Heh, and I forgot what I came here to say.

This is bullshit because:

1. The video tells a blatant lie. There IS a download, and isn't just an app, the whole track is being streamed from the Internet. There is simply NO WAY for a cell phone to read an entire record by putting its camera on top of one little area.

2. It generates huge quantities of waste and packaging.

Vinyl does not sound better. One might prefer it

You must be using some definition of "better" that I don't grok. For me, "preferred" MEANS "better".

Audiophilism is a disease, and it has nothing to do with music. Music has nothing to do with "sound quality", whatever that is. If you prefer vinyl, then VINYL IS BETTER. Objective standards? No such thing. And I wouldn't be interested in... [more]

ADHD meds are commonly knows as "Amphetamines". With all the associated issues of abuse. And if you need uppers to stay focused AND sleeping pills to go to bed, I'm going to be concerned if they're not being monitored effectively.

My problem isn't people who take meds for ADHD. My problem is people who abuse ADHD meds. Zimmerman really should have had his blood drawn as part of the investigation. Guess that's one reason to avoid a trip to the hospital.

Which sort of cuts straight to the heart of the "solution" to racism being for people to just try not to say blatantly racist things in front of other people.

I think for many people, not just of her generation but in general, the only thing they feel is necessary in order for them to tick the little "probably not a racist" checkbox in their minds is to not actively commit violence against minorities.

I'm saying the the article assumes that the NSA is breaking the law (as I understand it - by looking associating the phone number with people and entities without a warrant) to say that the collection of metadata is criminal. I don't like the new logo at all. It has some potential, but it is poorly designed.

You really have to approach it as a period artifact. It's pretty pitch-perfect, perhaps even a bit ahead of the period, reflecting the emergence of photo typography, and an explosion in new font designs.
