MeFi post: Benazir Bhutto Assasinated
languagehat, stick with language and leave the more difficult matter of humanity and compassion to others.

Screw you too, pal. Did you know her personally? Then I call bullshit on your "humanity and compassion." You "mourn her loss" because you saw her name in the newspapers. Unless you're equally full of hot burning compassionate tears for every single human who dies anywhere, you're a canting hypocrite. I don't see any... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Hot-blooded, check it and see / got a fever of 312.594444° Kelvin ...
Sorry, but it seems important to point out that Kelvin doesn't have degrees. It's simply 312.59 Kelvin.

MetaTalk post: So, did you survive eating the sandwich?
Oh right, sorry about that. I ended up draining most of their blood, and burning what was left. I then took these remains and dumped them in a fast flowing, deep part of the river. Naturally I did all of this whilst wearing thick rubberized clothing that I also disposed of.

At this point I'm fairly certain that I got away with it.

Ask MeFi post: I need thoughtful Chicago insights!
It's really hard to sum Chicago up, in part because it's so segregated. (And I don't just mean in a racial sense. You know that whole "city of neighborhoods" cliche? It's true, and it has both positive and negative effects.) But I'll try, with the caveat that this is all subjective and other people might think it's total bullshit.

To understand Chicago, you have to understand that the city has historically been run by working-class, white Catholics. To a... [more]

MeFi post: A million dollars ain't what it used to be...
Sue me, but I sympathize.

I live in one of the cheapest countries in the world doing work that pays me a salary well above the local average. Other than the housing market, nothing's expensive in Beijing, and anything below a car-level purchase is far more than affordable.

Not going off the rails on a spending spree is hard enough. I mean, I could go out tomorrow and have a new laptop. Lots of people tell me to, because this one's 4 years... [more]

MeFi post: Thriller in Manilla?
You remember your cues and your remember your moves. Any man who forgets his cue spends a night in the box. Any man who turns wrong spends a night in the box. You keep to your space and step lightly. Any man stepping on any other man's feet spends a night in the box.

MeFi post: Do not collect $200. Do not pass Go.
I'm sorry, is it a normal thing for people to be 'out on bail pending appeal', or just the well-connected ones? If you're found guilty, shouldn't you be in prison serving a sentence? Do crack dealers and rapists get to be 'out pending appeal' or just white-collar criminals?

Ask MeFi post: Explain the IMF to me
Imagine you owe your rent for the month but you haven't got it. ...Your friends in the apartment building take pity on you, club together and lend you the cash....

No.

You have a family and you own some land. Maybe you're raising food for the family, but you can't get them clothes, medicine, education, running water, etc. When you try to sell your crops on the market, you find that they're not worth much. You come up with the... [more]

Ask MeFi post: If you killed somebody, how would you dispose of the body without getting caught?
First, be smart from the very beginning. Pulverize all teeth, burn off fingerprints, and disfigure the face. Forcing a DNA test to establish identity (if it ever comes to that) might introduce the legal/forensic hurdle that saves your ass down the line. An unidentifiable body can, in a pinch, be dressed in thrift store clothes and dropped in a bad part of town where the police are less likely to question it. I don't reommend that disposal method, I'm just saying an easily identifiable body is an... [more]

MeFi post: iffy jiffy
It would have been totally awesome if they would have pointed the camera in the district manager's face and he would have said "I'm Steven Ayoub!" but then the guy behind the counter would have jumped up and yelled "No! I'm Steven Ayoub!" and then the mechanic would yell "I'm Steven Ayoub!" and then the cameramen would be, like, "What?" and the reporter would be like "What?" and then back at the studio the girl anchor would be, like, "So ..... I like the helicopter idea. Better still if you come down the drop line with a cigarette in your mouth.

Have you considered the possibility of a Segway?

He's going for James Bond, not Woz.

MetaTalk post: Calling someone a rapist could be libelous
cribcage: I didn't say you can't call Joe Francis a rapist. I said you shouldn't, because it's wrong to go around declaring people guilty based on limited and questionable evidence.

There is such a thing as unlimited evidence? Or unquestionable evidence?

I would argue the contrary. 4th Amendment protections demanding due process do not and should not apply to our interpersonal encounters with people. The majority of crimes... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How do I tell my friend I have strong feelings for him without being too intense?
Tell him you are going to scare the crap out of him, then ask him to marry you. Get right down to it. If that kind of things scares him after five years, sleeping together, and all that... well, then, you know where you are.
