Where can we enjoy eating and drinking in San Diego?

Recommendations for places to eat and drink in San Diego? We're stuck at the Manchester Grand Hyatt at One Market Place for the next four days with no car, but willing to walk. But not to any of the places we saw tonight.

Skyscrapers & Submarines

Mr. Bungle Monday!!! In their 15-year career, the band only made one music video and it was banned by MTV for being ... well, generally deranged. Quote Unquote was originally called Travolta but Warner Bros. pressured them into changing the title. Luckily, their 3rd and final album left enough of a lasting impression to warrant fanmade videos. Thus, we now have: a)YT user tkan's Chris Cunningham-inspired Retrovertigo & the Hitchcock-esque Pink Cigarette clips; b)YT user Illusionoel's Goodbye Sober Day, which reworks footage from Baraka; and c)Vertigo, a beautiful medley of the album itself, California, performed by a highschool drumline

What old-school comics are worth reading in their current run?

What long-running superhero comic book monthlies are currently putting out really good story arcs, art, or otherwise have a creative team that sets them apart? Like is Green Lantern having a great year? Uncanny X-men?

An Interview with Ray Kurzweil

Ray Kurzweil: That Singularity Guy In the year 2050, if Ray Kurzweil is right, nanoscopic robots will be zooming throughout our capillaries, transforming us into nonbiological humans. Ray Answers the following questions & more: Are we going to look like humans forever, or will we eventually just become ghosts in the machine while our physical bodies devolve into dwarves with lobster hands? Is the ultimate goal to transcend biology and choose how long we would like to live?

OddBook - keeping track of your reading

I've been tracking my reading since 1997. In 2002 a friend of mine created a simple PHP application that created a booklist with RSS feed and a search and archives and I've been using it ever since. It's been tweaked a few times over the years [thanks and hosted from Uranus] but just recently cowbellemoo helped me get it in shape to put it up on Google Code. Actually he pretty much did all the work. Examples on my longstanding booklist and his example list.

Can you recommend any feminist princess dolls I can buy for my 6-year-old goddaughter?

Can you recommend any feminist princess dolls I can buy for my 6-year-old goddaughter? I don't mind getting her princesses, but they have to be awesome princesses who really are heroes in their own right! Mulan is the best of the Disney princesses, IMO, but I don't really want to give Disney my money. So far all I've thought of are Wonder Woman and She-Ra (not that I can find affordable She-Ra dolls nowadays anyway), but I worry that they won't seem 'princessy' enough for my goddaughter to really appreciate and love them. Lots of pink and fancy clothing is fine, but I want to show her princesses who save the prince (or don't need one, or ditch him for another princess, or whatever) and kick ass on their own. Any suggestions?

Phriday Phlash Physics Phun

Physics Games is a collection of browser games that all have at least a rudimentary physics model. Some of the games I've enjoyed are Roly Poly Eliminator, Totem Destroyer 1 & 2, Demolition City and Red Ball. Most are fairly simple but some are complex, notably IncrediBots 1 & 2, which might as well require an engineering degree (slight hyperbole). My absolute favorite type of game on this site is the destroy-castles-with-a-trebuchet game, handsomely represented by not one but three games, Castle Clout, Castle Clout: Return of the King (no Tolkien connection) and Crush the Castle. All this is but a small sample of what's on offer.

Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good

The Big Bad Wolf won't howl no more. Busch Gardens Williamsburg, the Virginia amusement park with a friendly Western European theme, announced on July 24 that it was officially retiring The Big Bad Wolf, its iconic suspended roller coaster. The Wolf, which opened in 1984, was primarily built by Arrow Dynamics, the firm which also designed the world's first corkscrew inversion and the first coaster to top 200 feet in height. While not the world's first suspended roller coaster, the Big Bad Wolf could proudly lay claim to the fact that it was the first successful suspended coaster. Charmed though it is, the circumstances around its sudden September 7th closure date may make the ride the newest entry in the Williamsburg park's strange history.

Mac deployment/imaging options that don't require rocket scientists

I am a novice mac lab manager. I was using the popular Netrestore to roll out images to our mac lab. I discovered that the software has been discontinued, and furthermore it now breaks when I try to use it.
So I guess I need to know what the easiest alternative to Netrestore/firewire drives is for imagine our two labs.

A nation of nonbelievers

Spare your wrath about 80s music, please, this is my childhood we're talking about.

I've been looking for an old CD my parents used to play when I was little, caled "here come the hits", but it doesn't seem to be anywhere visible. In fact, it seems to have dropped out of existence entirely; I can't even find a tracklisting on the internet so I can gather the songs from other sources. I know "shout" by tears for fears was one of the songs, and "black cars look better in the shade" and "one night in bangkok" are likely contenders. Can somebody help me find an official tracklist for this album of 80's one-hit-wonders so I can get some closure?
