The bagpipe video is interesting. At first I thought the timing and sound were out of sync. But I'm so accustomed to seeing the breathing more connected with the playing. When I saw the fingering lining up and processed it was bagpipes, it made more sense.

Gunhild Carling grew up in a musical family. Here she is at nine years old playing the trombone and her father Hans is on trumpet, her brother Max on clarinet, her sister Gerd on piano and mother Aina on banjo. In case you're wondering, the family is still jamming together.

The Swedish bagpipe (sometimes called säckpipa in English to distinguish it from other variations like the Spanish gaita or the Great Highland bagpipe) has a single-reed chanter. This means that with the drone(s) turned off, it's basically a primitive clarinet attached to a bladder. As such, it's not nearly as odd a fit for jazz as it might initially seem.
