The Whelk, do you like Terry Pratchett novels? Because they're busy recreating Ankh-Morpork over on Aporkalypse, in case you haven't heard. Sounds like something you'd love. Go on.

I've found an easy solution. Own a computer that can barely play it, if at all, and then get your fix by watching good Minecraft videos doing all the digging and crafting for you.

I'm a huge fan of the Yogscast minecraft videos. Those guys are hilarious (and the subject of an upcoming post.)

Really? I mean I caught the first part of your statement where you said you can't play, but ... really? I played a lot of Minecraft, and the absolute last thing I want to do is watch someone else play. Of course I also can't stand TV news or podcasts; I need to consume information at my own pace.

So far the only thing on MeFightCraft (the official Aporkalypse screenshots site) is this post of the Alchemists' Guild. Having never read Pratchett I'm guessing this is some reference I'm just not getting.

I want Minecraft, but it's $5 more than I'm willing to spend. I guess I can always wait for a sale. Or not buy a coffee or something.

God, I'm broke. And cheap. A mixture of those two things.
posted by mccarty.tim at 8:52 PM on February 17, 2011

It didn't seem like a real Minecraft experience, because I watched the video all the way through.
If were authentic, I would have watched it for three hours, and then the main character would have gotten murdered by a spider or by some zombie cactus asshole, and I would have closed my browser in annoyance and disgust. And then I would have loaded up the web page like two minutes later, fully aware of how dumb I was being. And then I would have kept watching until either the state or the cats found my dead body.

Also, I smiled every time he took off that cardboard helmet to show how serious he was about what he was doing. Love it.

Really. My primary computer is a netbook, so running Minecraft is a ridiculous exercise in futility. I can barely get sticks made before the first nightfall in survival mode, much less find and mine coal. I think the first time I tried survival I spent the night in a sand hovel dug out with my bare hands, which was fine until I met my first creepers.

However, there's a ton of great Mincecraft videos out there, with the Yogscast videos being at the cream of the crop because they have such a great style and rapport while bantering back and forth. The Yogscast minecraft videos are here.

I think it's a great way to enjoy the game without having to do all your own mining, as well as staying current with new developments and mods, and it helps a lot that they have a wider range of expression than your average gamer. They're quite dry and witty without being too droll.

The future Minecraft post I'm alluding to is going to cover some of their better videos, as well as "The Shadow of Israphel" pseudo-RPG saga that has been ongoing in season 3, which makes great use of Minecraft as a sandbox and story-telling machine.

I still haven't caught the Minecraft bug, though maybe that's because I've only tried the free version. I don't think I have the right brain to play Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress. That said, I love looking at what other people have created in Minecraft

@loquacious - I run it on a netbook myself, and while it isn't the best, I can get it to be more than tolerable by reducing the view distance to the minimum.

@mccarty.tim - Look at it this way: by buying Minecraft, you will be saving money in the long run because you will be playing Minecraft instead of doing things that cost money. It's a win win.

It's funny because you're speaking as though there is such a thing as a "finished project" in Minecraft.
posted by CitrusFreak12 at 10:46 PM on February 17, 2011

The Gamblers' guild and the Times have not been built, so if you want to join us you are all very welcome.

The city is laid out roughly according to the official map, but we value creativity over super strict adherence to the details, so some stuff have magically moved around a bit in the city.

The wonderful thing about the 'finishedness' of a project like this is that it just gets better and better over time, but we are already getting a good mood in the city even though it's pretty rough still.

Yeah, I think that happened to you, me, and everyone else. I was even komara on MFC for a while until I realized that likely the only game I'd be playing was Minecraft, and having everyone remember one name on the forums and another in-game was kind of pointless.
