You don't suppose that if this were produced by anyone else...

So... am I missing something? What's the point of this? It seems like just an extra step between me and music, and I don't even get to see the music video.

I don't think it's aiming to become your primary media player. It's a joke, using an iconic scene from an 80s movie, although I think the point has been missed if you have to explain it.
I thought it was funny, anyways.

It's a fair cop crunchland, but I clicked the 'post to MeFi' button last night before realizing who the poster was.
So... am I missing something?
TheMidnightHobo, you might be missing the fact that you can plug any youtube video into the thing and make it become LLOYD DOBLER FROM THE CLASSIC BRATPACK MOVIE SAY ANYTHING proudly pumping your jams of choice.

Aha. As a 90's child, I can see why I would have missed this particular joke. Thanks for explaining.

The only Puddle of Mudd song I have ever liked. Or heard, I think.

The other thing I considered doing was looping the video of that scene, the cuts from her to him to her to him. But I thought the sort of stripped down iconic feel of the nearly-static .gif worked well. Almost like the ending credits scene from the NES adaptation of the film that never was.
And yeah, it's one of those things where either it makes total sense or makes no sense; without the specific memory of that scene from Say Anything (or, barring that, second-hand familiarity with the Lloyd Dobler Holding A Boombox Over His Head meme), it's just, what? Some guy holding up a boombox? So I can sympathize with the What-ness for folks experiencing that.

I have a hunch that John Cusack would probably rather spit tacks than do anything involving a boom box ever again in his life.
(Although, I'm strangely tempted to track down the name of the Fishbone song he was actually blasting when they were filming and plug that in for vermisillitude's sake.)

I have a hunch that John Cusack goes to sleep on piles of money every night thanks to the success of films like Say Anything, so has probably come to terms with the whole dorky boombox thing.

Say Anything is a Brat Pack movie?
Well, technically not. I mean, there's no actual definitive list, but if you take "Brat Pack Movie" to mean that it featured two members of the Brat Pack, the list seems to be quite limited.
I would say that, thematically and such, it does fit right in.
