Ralph McQuarrie, 1929–2012

Ralph McQuarrie, legendary concept artist for Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and many other projects, has passed away at the age of 82. Previously, here and here.
Without him, Star Wars as we know it would simply not exist. At all.
In fact it very possibly could have looked like Logan's Run.
So many .'s

Crap. I miss the guy already.
One thing about the original Star Wars films that's underappreciated is how "lived in" the universe looks. Tatooine is a messy, dirty, sandy outpost. And the Millennium Falcon is an old greasy pile of jury rigged space parts that happens to run exceptionally well because the space pirate and his Wookie co-pilot just happen know every inch of the ship because they've had to do numerous repairs.
And when I see McQuarrie's sketches for Star Wars, I see that lived in-ness. He could draw a weird sci-fi world that people inhabited. And that's hard to do. He drew this universe that was like an outer space wild west. It wasn't a shiny utopia. It was an odd place where people actually lived and had day to day lives.

As a child, I remember getting a Star Wars book with a bunch of his concept art in it. And I remember thinking it was stupid because it didn't look exactly like the movie. I was a stupid child.

Certainly the original trilogy would have been a whole different, and lesser, beast without his amazing concept work. Lucas' half-imagined universe became flesh with McQuarrie's pen. His drawings are the stuff of my childhood dreams.

Recommended it before, likely will again; Illustrated Star Wars Universe, if you like sci-fi, or art, or McQuarrie, or space, or robots, and have ~17$, it is well worth it, the book shows well how deeply that whole mythos has been influenced by so many people contributing to a big huge multi-media scrap-book project. He will have influenced and inspired many artists already, and hopefully his work will not be forgotten, and many more to come.

His illustrations never failed to amaze me and spark my imagination. I'm going to be hanging out with Syd Mead later on this week and I'm sure that Syd will have some fun stories to tell about Ralph. Their work was of a time, place, and arguably skill level, that is extremely lacking in the illustrators of today. When you're completely dependent on digital tools, you lose so much of the 'lived in' quality mentioned earlier. His matte paintings and character studies fully fleshed out in gouache the universe we've all come to know and love from the original trilogy. May he rest in peace.

I know they were just mentioned recently in another post but I have to add that watching the original trilogy in "despecialized" form would make an excellent tribute, I think, to his art's influence as it was meant to be seen.

That era was really a high-point in artistic design of science fiction movies. People like McQuarrie, H. R. Giger, Ron Cobb, Chris Foss and Syd Mead were doing amazing work in the late seventies and early eighties.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a visionary artist and such a humble man. Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars. His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph's fabulous illustrations and say, 'Do it like this.'
"Beyond the movies, his artwork has inspired at least two generations of younger artists—all of whom learned through Ralph that movies are designed. Like me, they were thrilled by his keen eye and creative imagination, which always brought concepts to their most ideal plateau. In many ways, he was a generous father to a conceptual art revolution that was born of his artwork, and which seized the imaginations of thousands and propelled them into the film industry. In that way, we will all be benefiting from his oeuvre for generations to come. Beyond that, I will always remember him as a kind and patient, and wonderfully talented, friend and collaborator."
