I'm not going to try to declaim anything like "kids these days can't communicate with words anymore?!?!?", because that would make me sound old and anyway I don't have a lawn for them to get off of. Plus, this stuff is pretty creative and amusing on its own.

What I am going to say, however, is that's a never-ending source of fascination to me how humans attempt to be understood across the Internet, where discussions don't have the benefit of tone of voice and body language/gestures to help comprehension. Sure, authors have been communicating for centuries strictly with words without the benefit of emoticons of any sort, but how many of us are accomplished writers? I know I struggle with it constantly and I'm always trying to figure out how to be clear about what I really mean without sounding stuffy or overwrought.

I wonder if anyone's done a study of whether the Internet has (apart from any sort of pictograms) actually improved writing ability and reading comprehension worldwide.

Thank you for saying this. I'm always mildly astonished at the arrogance of people who pooh pooh emoticons and other constructions that people put into their online communications. Yes, it's sad and depressing, but most people suck at communications. They write like they talk, but don't understand how that all works together.

ZeusHumms: They write like they talk, but don't understand how that all works together.

I know what you mean. And - full disclosure - I've been known to fall back on the use of an emoticon or two myself, though I try to keep that to a minimum to avoid looking corny or twee. My sense is that the arrogance you mention is borne of ignorance. I don't mean stupidity as such on the part of the writer; I mean ignorance in the sense that, outside of the odd "Creative Writing" class that most people (other than literature nerds or novelist wannabe's) wouldn't be caught dead in, we're not taught how to communicate effectively via the written word or to view our transcribed thoughts from any perspective other than our own.

For example, in the IT biz, I frequently encounter people who may know far more than I do about a technical subject but who are incapable of explaining their knowledge effectively to anyone who isn't more or less already familiar with the concepts. That's such a common trope, in fact, that SNL even created a character for it. I know, it's mostly "make fun of the nerd who's making fun of the non-nerd", but really, if the character was an effective communicator he wouldn't be portrayed as such a malcontent freak, and he'd be able to explain stuff better and avoid a lot of frustration for everyone involved.

Which of course wouldn't be nearly as funny...but I digress.

God damn I wish everyone would stop 返しing my ちゃぶ台. My living room is now a wreck.

For those of you who don't know where this comes from: at the end of every episode of the Japanese anime Star of the Giants (巨人の星) where the father Hoshi Ittetsu would flip over the family's chabudai (dining table) in the middle of dinner, sending everything flying. It's become a metaphor for the top of an organization/group to send everyone back to the drawing board.

Oh, and there's a video game (complete with actual chabudai) so you too can destroy a Japanese family's living room.
