Give a new meaning to the phrase 'trunk call'!

geddit?! hahahahaha

Oh my absolute god this is the best thing ever. I cannot believe how well he handles sliding photos, pushing tiny buttons. There was a short moment where I was no way how can the tip of a trunk be that dexterous?

Damn elephant. You amazing.

Okay people, take 526, let's see if he accidentally does anything that we can edit together to look like intentionality this time. ROLL CAMERA

That's assuming the screen we're seeing isn't matted-in CGI in the first place.

I demand the word phablet be revoked from the English language.

Um... this is just some commercial? I mean yeah sure, elephant and all, but really.
posted by JHarris at 7:45 AM on March 28, 2012 [9 favorites]

That was pretty cool, but all I could think was that the tablet was way too small for him -- that pachyderm needs an iPad.

... let's see if he accidentally does anything that we can edit together to look like intentionality this time.

... and? The elephant completes these tasks one way or another, even if he did make errors. In multiple (unmanipulated, uncut) shots in the original video and in the links located below the video especially he is focusing a large instrument (his trunk) into a very small, fingerlike point in order to push very small buttons. This was honestly impressive to me by itself. Moreso than holding a paintbrush, because I'd argue that it is more difficult with a trunk to push a tiny thing than hold what amounts to a stick.

The fact that he also responds to what the tablet does with continued interest (watch the one with the drums or any of the instrument things) and seems to be capable of understanding the woman's 'direction' and following her example is pretty fantastic. Question the 'intentionality', fine, and if you think it's CGI, fine. But I think you're kidding yourself. Yes, I am biased, but I don't think I'm reaching too far in this. The elephant is entertained and curious enough to stick around and see what all these different things do, at the very least.

Elephants are very intelligent, socially and mechanically. We know this from plenty of studies on their behavior.

Doubt it's fake. Elephants can do amazing things with their trunks. There are a lot of elephants trained to paint, for instance. But yeah, count me as one of those who sees this as a cynical ploy to sell a copycat product.

I love elephants too. It seems like the little teeny display would ask a lot of an elephant's eyes.

Guilty as charged. In my defense, their comments section has kind of trained me to mentally blur out any text on any youtube page.

It seems like an odd marketing angle. One of the biggest criticisms about the Note is that it's way too ludicrously big to use as a phone...so they make a viral video suggesting that it's the perfect size for an elephant?

This is where we find out that elephants are not very good at prank calls.

"Hello, lion?"

"Yes?"

"Is that herd of gazelle running?"

"Um...yeah. That's pretty much all they do. That and graze."

"WELL YOU'D BETTER GO CATCH THEM THEN HAHAHAHAHAHA *click*"

I'm typing this on a Note. I suppose it's too big for you mere mortals, but for me it is just fine. I had a Dell Streak before this and I love the large screen. The only people I talk to on the phone is my fiancée and mother and not at worried about what the phone looks like next to my head. You should really try it for yourselves before making any judgements, the Note is a great product.

If it's good enough for an elephant, it's good enough for me. Consider me converted.

My girlfriend carries her Kindle around all day in her purse, and it's barely noticeable. Plus she carries around an iPhone. I can see why someone would want to combine those too, and an iPad is just too big and heavy for all-day every-day carry.

that the tablet was way too small for him

Well, somebody get Android running on a 42" touchscreen monitor with a CCD camera and wifi access, set it up near the feeding kiosk of an elephant sanctuary, and let's see some pachyderm app action!

Re: all the hey guys this is a commercial comments, yeah. I think most of us know, given that it says the product name in the post and the tagline is "Phablet Blue". Unless you think schmod has a connection with the company I was under the impression the right thing to do is flag it and move on?

For me, if the content of the commercial is good enough I don't care. Commercials have been posted here and will be again.

Personally 'neat elephant playing with random tablet thing' is fine and I have no trouble ignoring the marketing angle. I'm sure as shit not any more inclined to buy it.

mistersquid: Look, a commercial!
From the FAQ: A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others.
Look, a good post!

If a cool thing frequently comes with an obnoxious extraneous thing, it is valid to criticize the extraneous thing.

Keeping him chained up in the back yard is cruel.

Not using an iPhone is cruel.
Using the stylus is cruel.

I feel compelled to mention that elephants are pretty good musicians too and this isn't all that different -- you know, hit something with your proboscis and it makes a cool sound or reacts in some other nifty way.

Am I the only one who sincerely thinks the Galaxy Note looks really cool?

And wishes he had a spare $600 to get one without a contract?

But realizes that there's no such thing as a spare $600 because life is expensive?

But seriously, I like my android phone, but don't like tiny buttons and I have big pockets because I am an adult male wearing big boy pants. I think they should be calling it a Phone+ or something, though.

Well, that's the same regardless of iPhone or Android.

True, but I mainly meant that you can't get a subsidy on an iPad.
