Because cute does not excuse reactionary right-wing rabble rousing.

Leave it to the Daily Mail comments section to make even these pictures a time for GRAR and doom. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

YOU JUST KILLED ME.

The fact that the wombat's name is Peggy is what really sent me over the edge. Thanks!

If you don't like cuddling a wombat, you've really got no business living in society. Also all children must own Diary of a Wombat. It's the Moby Dick of children's literature about wombats.

Wombats.

In that first picture, they kind of remind me of some old married couples I've seen.

Which makes me wonder: If these two could get married and have babies, what would the offspring be called? A "wombaroo"? A "kangabat"? Or perhaps something a bit more mundane, like "Alice" or "Steve"?

Sorry, need more caffeine...

It is spelled "frands". As in OMG BEST FRANDS.

In high school I was part of a city-wide science club thing. Our end-of-the-year project was to build a rocket (these were about 5 feet long and 6" in diameter) and launch it off at a big launch party thing.

Each rocket had to be named. Most people named theirs spaceshippy-sounding things, but I was am a Weird Kid, and named mine Wombat. I thought it was funny. People were all "Wombat is a stupid name for a rocket" and I was all "well your face is stupid," and that's about how things proceeded until launch day.

The Wombat soared higher than anyone else's rocket. (I'm not even, like, especially good at rocket building, I think I just got lucky.) However, mine was the only one that got lost. Everyone else got to take their launched rocket home for a souvenir. The Wombat was loose somewhere in the South Carolinian wild.

A few weeks later, I got a call from someone who had found my rocket! (We put our contact information inside them for just such a situation.) Their dog had found it when they were out on a hike, and it had been spending its time buried under a bunch of mucky leaves. I got The Wombat back, but it was pretty disheveled.

Anyway, what I'm saying is...Wombat was just a randomly chosen name at the time. But now, after seeing pictures of Peggy here, I can see that I am the greatest prognosticator ever. There is almost zero difference in appearance between my post-launch wombat and this one.

My darling and I send each other cute animals and crazy links all day. He sent this as his first e-mail of the day yesterday and I told him, I quit. You won the Internet. I'm just going to turn off my computer and go home.

Can someone clue me in on the significance of "Peggy"? I get Anzac, but not Peggy.

I had a storybook about this very scenario when I was little. Joey the Kangaroo and Wally the Wombat played together and got into mischief, and then Joey's mother told him he couldn't play with Wally anymore because he was supposed to be learning how to be a kangaroo and should just stick with his own kind.

Um, wombats are adorable: pic, pic, pic

Until you make them mad.

I once saw one of the zookeepers at the Australia zoo walking a wombat on a leash. I got to pet the little guy. Not as soft as I'd expected. Also, did you know that wombats defecate in the shape of cubes? (page title possibly NSFW)

For those wishing to save countless kittens a very wet death, you can instead read the story where it was published previously (with the same pics), here. My disclaimer is that I know nothing about the politics of news.com.au; you may be saving kittens at the expense of puppies or baby seals.

I bet Peggy will be able to keep up with Anzac. Wombats move with surprising speed and agility when they want to - a sprinting Wombat is bloody fast!

I got to hold a baby wombat when I was a kid (SO CUTE!!! It was old enough to be both tiny and furry!). I walked past the vet's office in a country town one day and the vet was just sitting outside feeding the baby wombat. When I held it, it gave me one impressive scratch on my arm that I kept drawing over with biro as it healed in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to have a wombat scratch tattoo... for the memories y'know.

Artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti had a pet wombat. He was pretty wombat-obsessed, actually. But reading this makes me think he might have been a well-suited-for-Metafilter beanplate overthinker.

Believe it or not, National Geographic has a whole show called UNLIKELY ANIMAL FRIENDS, which I only know because I saw a presentation about it today and they handed out screeners. So I have several episodes, which I am waiting to watch until my next really bad day. The clip reel had a cat and an owl playing together.

I'm so excited. I'm going to make a German chocolate cake, so the frosting will hopefully look a little furry :]
