"Dog owners have a dog park where they can show off their dogs, but cat people don't have that," she says. "The Internet is where people who love cats can go to say, 'Look how cute my cat is.'" On cat videos on the Internet, and maintaining the popularity of Henrí and Maru, while designers of the Scratching Post note how how some owners start writing in a first feline style.

Related, "Henrí 2: Paw de Deux" the most popular video in the series, recently won the Golden Kitty. Also links to adverts featuring cats, and on what it's like to watch 10,000 cat videos. And also; while cat owners spend up to 40,000 dollars to go through film school, some cats spend rather less to get a diploma.

I occasionally give seminars on semiotics as part of a relatively new international programme here in my uni. Today, a student came up to me after the seminar and said: "I thought I was coming here, and it'll all be philosophy and semiotics, dense and deep stuff, but today we spent sixty minutes analyzing a picture of a cat. And that's amazing!"

The picture that we spent an hour analyzing according to its syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects was this one.

haha can you imagine the mayhem if a cat park was a thing that existed

I've never taken my dog to a dog park to "show her off". I take her there so that she can run around and meet other dogs. It's not about me.

Pyrogenesis: thank you for that "snort diet coke out of my nose" moment.

I was unaware that there is also diet cocaine.

I'm trying to think of the cat-people equivalent of the oblivious dog park people who gab away on their phones while their dog leaves a big shit somewhere or steals our dog's ball and runs away.

Stop that, my nose hurts. Also, this.

This is the thread where we find links to all the cute cat videos, right? Pretty please?

I like the internet in that I am not allergic to this post.

I mostly agree with you. Then again, I did take this picture one of the first few days DC's first official dog park was open. (Never seen them back.)

I have never been interested in cat videos, or cats for that matter, until I recently ran across Tard the Grumpy Cat (that's "Tard" as in "Tardar Sauce", not a slur).

Um, but isn't it "Tartar sauce," making "Tardar Sauce" a deliberate misconstruction of the word intended (possibly) to form a reference to the word "retarded" in a way that could probably safely be construed as derogatory?

Fnarf, this one made me spit peach out over my keyboard.

Cats are more photogenic.

They also smell better. If the internet ever gets smell-o-vision, cats will replace the last of the dogs.

I don't think cats are known for being all that great with spelling or grammar.

Some more collections of cat videos here and here and here and here.

The phrase "cat video" on YouTube returns "About 149,000 results".

I'm with Scientist and inigo2, though I'll say one of the things I enjoy about taking my boy to the park is looking at the other dogs. So it's more voyeurism than exhibitionism.

Somewhat vaguely related: Buzzfeed announces cat who wins the Internet.

This seems like as good a place as any to link to a picture of my cat appearing to express disapproval at being interrupted.

Look deep into its eyes, reveal your twenty dollar bill, and my fiancees cat will dance for you. Dance. Dance for you, MetaFilter reader...

I don't own any pets because of severe allergies. But I love them. I look up cat videos online, and go to dog parks to watch your dogs. True story.

Cat parks would be...trippy.

Shishi may be cute, but does he fruitlessly keep trying to get into boxes that are too small? Maru still rules the internet for sheer pussinality.

I think you're on to something: Dog lovers like to look at other people's dogs. Cat lovers like other people to look at their cats.
