I'd forgotten how much of the grizzly's hunting method is "sit here in water and wait for fish to jump in mouth."

Meanwhile the bears are all "hey, let's pretend we're humping and see if the salmon try to sneak past while we're otherwise occupied?" "Oh, yeah, sure. Let's 'pretend' we're humping. You tried that one on me last year, Maurice." "No, for reals, it'll work, one...two...hups-a-daisy!" "WHAT? Get the fuck off me, Maurice! I am NOT your hump-buddy, o.k.? God. posted by tavella at 12:45 PM on July 15, 2013

Alas, work filters prevent me from watching this, but...

I'm still basking from my visit this weekend to the Buffalo Zoo, where they had TWO, count 'em, TWO bebbeh polar bears. They would chase each other and they would playfight and they would playfight in the water and the one would suck his thumb and the one would hide in the shelter and the other would jump on top of the shelter and surprise the first one and the first one would come out all surprised and mad but you could tell it was all an act and then they would playfight some more and then get all tuckered out and sit down and their little bumbums would get all dirty so they would go swimming again and playfight again and it was AWESOME.

In summary: bebbeh polar bears.

mygothlaundry, that reminds me of another animal that was laying down.

I had taken my two boys to the local zoo. It was getting near closing time when we passed by the elephant enclosure. This one elephant was laying down, on his side. The other two elephants seemed concerned as they were prodding him with their trunks. After about five minutes of watching them, it was apparent the two elephants were not giving up their efforts to help this one elephant to his feet. We walked around until we found one of the zoo staff. My boys told the zoo keeper about the elephant just laying there and how we were worried about him. The zoo keeper started walking towards the elephant enclosure at a fast clip. As we all cleared the trees and had a full view of the elephant laying down, the zoo keeper started laughing. He told my boys that the elephant on the ground had been the elephant ride that day and he is just tired. The zoo keeper was very nice to us and thanked my boys for being concerned about the elephant and getting him help.

Maybe he is just tired from fishing all day.

Here is the top comment on the linked page (by Buffy • 3 months ago):
The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Katmai National Park and other Aniakchak National Parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.
They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.
Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.
It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.
Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.
