My studio pets are not usually helpful (although you can hear the "percussion" they "played" on this track if you listen carefully).

Seconding mintcake that Tape Op is a good read, well worth the time for anyone involved in recording music. (Wish they'd make the body type in the print version a little larger, though.) And the pics of studio pets are fun - I especially enjoyed the one of the turtle at the mixing board.

I used to have a Zebra Finch who would sit (and shit) on my mixer. She liked the warm. Never took a picture, though...
