We'll see how long this lasts before Disney's lawyers get involved. Anyone else remember "Air Pirates"?

It was really nice to see Donald Duck go hard Navy on those three jerkwad cats. That was a really nice thing to see.

The Ed Hardy shirts on the cats was pitch perfect.

Written by Max Landis

Is it Max "Chronicle" Landis? Dude can write.

The frame with Donald kicking those three cats' asses... in my mind I can hear the sound of it.

Does anyone know why Goofy's name is "Liam" in this? Wikipedia doesn't have that as an alias or nickname for Goofy Goof, so I'm a little stumped.
posted by Poppa Bear at 8:48 AM on November 7, 2013

I assumed it was just a writing exercise "what could Goofy's real name be; the one that his friends call him, but most people don't even know is his real name?" Like how they call Mickey "Mike".

This is exactly what it's like. Shit this is every party I've ever been to since I turned 30.

Holy shit, that really was excellent, all the way to the end. That bit where Minnie is talking about her night out with the princesses: "It's always fun and terrible at the same time. They're all hot and human. Makes me feel like an old, fat mouse."

According to Mr. Landis, "Because Goofy's name is apparently William Goofy." Citation needed, I want to say.

I dunno, I figured it was to head off any expectation of reading the "Minnie's effin goofy" punchline. As it was for a moment it seemed like Landis was going there. Nice feint.

Thank for this gritty Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel I did not ask for.

This isn't "gritty" at all. This is what a night out with the boys in your late-thirties/early-forties is like. It's not like when you're young and everything is fun: when you're older you and your friends have all experienced a lot of life disappointments, most things haven't worked out as you expected, you have to find your happiness where you can mostly, and you have to love and support your buddies because they're a large part of that.

The comic really hit home for me on a number of levels.

Compared to 40s pastiche nostalgia I guess? I was fully sincere when I said thank you, I was not expecting to be moved by Mickey Mouse.

I thought it was going to tip over into juvenile "let's see how dark we can make this" terrain. I'm really glad it didn't. Very real and affecting.

I'm not sure what I was expecting going in, but THIS is what Disney SHOULD be spending their time doing.

It reminds me of one of those hollywood "real life" movies where they have a party at one of the star's house and marriages are on and off and some drugs and they go out looking for the dog which got out of the backyard, and the director has a flirtation with the new star in the laundry room while the older star comes to grips with her getting casted as the mom role instead of the ingenue role. Then there's some crying and maybe an emergency room visit as they get resolution on their friend's suicide. And at the sunrise there's a guest asleep in a lawn chair by the pool who comes in and starts making coffee and let's do some more yoga.

Wow, thanks for this. My brother just forwarded this to me, as I somehow missed it on first post. He and I are both in our late 30s, and he's the lucky duck with the crew of boys (men...!) he's grown up with since early grade school. I can relate to so much of this on my own, but I feel mostly grateful and a little envious that he has such an incredible gift in his own life.

A great story and a good argument for why Disney should be forced to give up ownership of these characters, because no way in hell could this ever be authorised.

It reminds me of that Slate article, How to Make The Simpsons Relevant Again: The Characters Should Start Getting Older.

Yeah, I liked that a lot.

posted by codacorolla at 7:21 AM on December 6, 2013 [1 favorite]

Hah, me too. For the first page or two it felt like it was just going to go for the shock value (Disney characters cussing, lol!) but it was so clearly... *affectionate* towards the characters.

@Toekneesan

I assume Ellie is meant to be Max's deceased mother. Cursory googling indicates she was never given a name, so I suspect Landis just picked one.
