Behold the trailer for The Visitor, which is now being re-released by Drafthouse Films. Co-financed by the notorious Film Ventures International, whose founder's whereabouts are currently unknown, this Italian-American co-production features John Huston, Shelley Winters, Sam Peckinpah, birds, Franco Nero, and Neal Boortz. It is also an amazing piece of work that has befuddled and delighted many.

I've had a used VHS copy of this ever since the Hollywood Video near me shut down several years ago, but I haven't watched it yet...Maybe I should continue to hold off on watching it at home and go see it when it hits the big screen.

I've heard great things.

This is the best film review blurb ever:

The Mt. Everest of insane '70s Italian movies!

I only pray that I should someday see such praise heaped on my work.

Wow oh wow, drug fueled 70s excess is crazytown, I love that clip burnmp3s linked especially the "oh what that happened, can't blame me it was an accident" look on the 8 year old's face as the woman in yellow turns around having been shot.

Unfortunately I missed my chance to see this here in Chicago last weekend. Hope it comes around again.

Heh, I never knew that about the founder of Film Ventures International. I always had a strong sense of skeeze every time I watched one of their amazing opening credits sequences from MST3K-featured movies like Pod People and Cave Dwellers; now I know where it came from.

This was showing in Chicago's Music Box as the midnight show this weekend, and I have been regretting being an old person who can't get himself to a midnight show even when it is less than a mile from my apartment.

This clip on io9 was pretty delightful.

On preview: hello dnash.

MCMikeNamara - My excuse is that I had other evening plans both Friday and Saturday nights last weekend. Also that I thought it had already shown the week before and didn't know it was still there! D'oh.

Mister A's forthcoming film is the Mt. Vesuvius of Mt. Everests!

(There you go. No need to thank me.)

Fuckin A'. Drafthouse is a true force for cinematic good. Also, their tumblr is pretty neat.

I have seen this trailer floating around for a couple of weeks now and I am so hesitant to watch the movie because I am not sure the transition from 70s suburban suspense to Altered States on Arrakis can ever live up to my expectations.

I know I've said this before, but this is the movie I was born to watch.
It's as if some sort of focus group consisting solely of myself (myself now as I was four years old when they made this thing) listed all their pet interests and quirks and enthusiasms and some crazy millionaire looked at the sheet, said "fuck it" and stamped "GREEN LIGHT" on it with a comically large stamp.

I need to see this as soon as humanly possible.

I actually saw this when it was originally released in theaters. I recall that it was riding the wave of "young girls are creepy" subgenre made popular by The Exorcist and Audrey Rose. The only thing I remember from this film was when the little girl tells someone (John Huston?) to "Go fuck yourself".

I want to download it so bad but Im being good and waiting for the Drafthouse BluRay, just like I did with last year's brilliant Miami Connection.
If they are gonna do the work of making my dreams come true, then I owe them some cash.

It's part of the "devil child" genre popular during the 60s and 70s that reflected the counter-culture trend against traditional family values. It wasn't cool to settle down and have kids when free love and free living was the thing, man. The child is a "visitor" because, well, visitors don't stick around by definition (horror theme underlying abortion subtext).

was there some kind of mandate that every 70s movie feature at least one shot of a motorcyclist crashing and flipping headfirst off his bike?

One of the amazing things about the 70s, in addition to avocado-green kitchen appliances, disco, and double-digit inflation? Motorcycles to burn.

Also, dang, thanks to that tumblr I googled Yvonne Craig, who I never realized was both Batgirl AND the Orion slave girl. Wow.

I've only seen the trailer, but it was shot all around my old neighborhood. I'm pretty sure that it used some of the same buildings as the first season of The Walking Dead.

I work with some old timers in the film business here, so I'll dig for stories...
