The fact that this food-based humor and the curiously uproarious French laughter really reminds me of the Big In France Kids in the Hall sketch like nobody's business.

(That is French, right?)

I've seen this type of gag done many times before, but for some reason, the live audience gives it that little extra je ne sais quoi.

I'm surprised the poor dog wasn't spooked and bolted.

It's one thing when kids fire up the camcorder and upload this tomfoolery to YouTube, but did people actually pay to witness this?

NB: I love silly animal videos

I love Metafilter. I came to comment that it was clearly French and everyone already knew. But seriously this was amazing. There is nothing more special than a dog doing basically anything.

Better this than Cats.

I don't think they were springing this on the dog for the first time. Presumably she did fine in training and rehearsals with people watching.

I assume the way you get a dog to eat vegetables is to cook them in stock. Though I have known dogs who'd eat a carrot that wasn't, if it was cooked.

Dogs will eat almost anything. And I used to live with two cats who loved broccoli*.

This was a birthday party, so maybe the audience wasn't so large, although they were close to the microphone.

*It's not anecdata - it's a non-sequitur.

I've watched a dog beg for raw carrots. Dogs have diverse palates.

Carrots were such a prized treat for our family's dog Cassie that, when my parents needed to start eating healthier snacks and baby carrots were suddenly always in the fridge, Cassie learned to wait right next to you when you opened the fridge door and would bee-line for the crisper drawer. If Dad was eating carrots there was almost nothing that would distract her from the very important process of begging as many baby carrots as possible from him. She learned to recognize the sound of the vegetable peeler. In short, carrots are a thing for some dogs. (Also this was an excuse to finally make a gallery of her old photos.)

Raw is crunchier. My heeler steals raw carrots from the horses, who do NOT appreciate it. The best game in the world is steal the carrot, gnaw the carrot, human throws the carrot, more gnawing, rinse, repeat.

Actually, not the rinse part. The dog doesn't care if it's grotty.

I've also seen this gag before, but the combination live audience and emotive dog really sold it.

Actually, it's German. From the comments:

Obviously a British audience. Audience is more funny than the dog!

actually it´s german :-)

The original with - German introduction.
They also explain that they had carrots instead of meat because it was easier for the dog to be controlled. This dog does alright though. Very refined.

It would have been too facile to make a joke about Un chien andalou, I suppose.
