It was a-him, Luigi.

Nintendo would like to remind you that the Year of Luigi isn't over. And how could it be, when the best part of Mario Kart 8 might just be Luigi's Death Stare? Spawning a number of gifs, videos, remixes, oh so many parodies, and a subreddit (r/LuigiDeathStares) already more popular than r/MarioKart, Luigi and his angry eyebrows are having a moment.

This is why John Leguizamo was the wrong person to play Luigi.

It should have been Danny Trejo.

If we're talking Luigi (and why wouldn't we), can we talk about how Alan Jackson makes the Luigi noise in "Chattahoochee"? When I learned that, it blew my mind, and it continues to blow it to this day.

My sons always fight over who gets to be Luigi in Super Mario Galaxy or Mario Kart.

My older son turns 12 in a couple of months, and at this point and time *really* wants a Wii U. Me, I cannot for the life of me see what the point is. Taking a look at the stuff posted on YouTube, there is almost no difference between the Wii U and original Wii U games. If anything, the new Mario Kart 8 looks actually *worse* than the Wii version.

The graphics don't look all that shit-hot, either. I mean, they're not bad, but not much better than the Wii (which in turn was not much better than the damn Game Cube).

While our original Wii is getting long in the tooth, we have a ton of games for it that our 5 year old (there is a huge age gap between our two kids) seems to like, and I cannot figure out why I would want to shell out for a Wii U.

There doesn't even seem to be a Zelda game for the Wii U (can this possibly be true????? why has Nintendo not release a Zelda title yet?????)

I can't quite get my head around the Wii U, and it's a bit of a disappointment, since I have played Nintendo since forever (played Donkey Kong and Mario Brothers, and then the first Nintendo system).

MK8 is actually supposed to be really good, one of the best Mario Karts in franchise history going by most reviews I've read.

I suspect a Zelda will be announced soon, but honestly Nintendo's Wii U strategy as a whole has been pretty bizarre and seemingly haphazard.

The Wii U is great. Their marketing has been complete shit, though, so I'm not surprised it's been a financial failure. Most people still think it's a Wii accessory. Hopefully they'll announce a new Zelda at E3?

Never played a lot of Mario Kart in the past but I'm really enjoying 8-- love that it has split-screen multiplayer, which for some godforsaken reason is a rarity in racing games these days.

The Mario Kart for SNES remains my favorite, but I did like the Wii version a lot too. For some reason I didn't enjoy the N64 Mario Kart installment (although, the N64 for me was basically the Goldeneye Ocarina Blitz machine in the living room). I'd be excited for this one if I had a Wii U.

Is it really any different from Wii? At least they *tried* to get 3rd party support at the beginning. Then pretty much any other 3rd party publisher but Ubisoft said "no thanks".

I dunno. MK8 makes me want to get the WiiU. I *do* like what little I've seen of it (my friend had that Sonic cart game which was a fucking blast). I think Zelda will be the system killer. Actually, the Mario World looked AMAZING as well.

But I do so wish 3rd parties would step up. :(

The Wii U is great.

Between the convoluted setup process, the broken networking, and the extended time it takes to actually get into a game when you switch it on, I think it's inferior to the Wii. I don't care for the big rectangular controller with the screen either.

Super Mario 3D World is fun, but it would have been more fun on the Wii. It feels like I paid Nintendo not for a better system, but for a chance to buy the newer Mario games.

I thought Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii was pretty innovative, but the Wii U version just looks like Super Mario Galaxy with a new skin and a few new minor features.

It's just such a major investment (once you factor in controllers and buying the games) and I'm a little afraid that our older son will grow out of it rather quickly, while the Wii is enough for our younger son.

I would rather get them a true gaming machine (for some reason Goat Simulator craps out even the computers in our household with a dedicated GPU) and start playing Team Fortess or Kerbal.

I want to like the Wii U, but the crazy rollout strategy and its lack of games, plus the rather un-innovative approach to the games, makes me think it is just a big waste of money.

I've been laughing my ass of at these since the first couple started going viral last weekend.

I have yet to be able to make it through a good one without giggling like an idiot.

My favorites at the moment outside of the original one are this, this and this (the barrel roll kills me). I'm also glad that other characters are getting attention.

I only wish that DK's trollface and the creepy expression Yoshi makes were getting more attention.

They actually fixed the long startup in a patch yesterday-- there's a quickload option now that makes things a lot better. But yeah, if you're not really into the Mario games there's pretty much no real reason to get a Wii U right now, since third parties aren't biting. Even they are just the best versions of their respective series-- not particularly innovative, just very, very polished. The big reason we got one was the local multiplayer, something not really offered by other consoles. It's a good party machine.

I'm really enjoying MK8 but yeah it makes me super nostalgic for Version One (SNES 4 EVAR). This may be a case of "your first pizza is always the best pizza you ever had"...what's that called again?

That said, the HD remake of Zelda Wind Waker is fun and had some good integrations with the WiiU gamepad second screen. I've also heard good things about Pikmin 3 but have never played that series and so I haven't tried it yet. Also when does Smash Bros. come out again? That's a critical moment for many, I think.

And it totally kills me that Nintendo is struggling so hard in the current market. They have always been my favorite Videogames Entity. Their overall sense of play and fun and family* is very refreshing and almost Apple-like in its single-mindedness.

*NES and SNES in Japan were "FamiCom" and "Super FamiCom" i.e. FAMILY COMPUTER how sweet is that I mean come on

I am planning on getting MK8 (the free Wii U game you get with it is a nice offer, just the excuse I need to get Pikmin 3 finally), and I've love Super Mario 3D World, which is actually quite difficult later on. They've also remade the amazingly underrated Wind Waker for Wii-U, which I really like. I'm not as enthused for the "Hyrule Warriors" game in the works, but they've promised that the next Zelda is going to break some of the unfortunate trends that have made Zelda games less interesting as of late.

The game you link to is Super Mario 3D World, which is not as similar to Galaxy, at least in my mind, that I would confuse the two. I corrected you because I wasn't sure if you meant the Wii games (which as I said do play on Wii U), or maybe you thought Galaxy 2 was a Wii-U game.

Just trying to understand what the heck your point was.

These are great. One of my favourite things about playing games on the Wii is the disconnect between violence and the cutesy Nintendo aesthetic. So on one hand here you have these horrific crashes with the characters grimacing in pain and fear, but it's Baby Luigi, so it's hilarious.

The best example of what I'm talking about is in Wii Boxing; when the adorable little Miis get knocked the fuck out they collapse like a sack of potatoes being dropped, usually head-first, into an unnatural jumble of arms and legs, and the effect is more violent and unsettling than it would be in a more realistic game.
posted by The Card Cheat at 3:02 PM on June 5, 2014

You didn't, you did link to 3D World.

On New Super Mario Bros. and the multiple times they've made it now, well, yeah. Enough with that Nintendo. Just to keep everyone on the same page, this is what Nintendo has been doing lately, re: Mario:

- Super Mario Galaxy: 2 games, last seen on the (non-U) Wii.
- New Super Mario Bros.: 4 games, one for DS, one for Wii, one for Wii-U, and one, New Super Luigi, is DLC for the Wii-U game
- Super Mario 3D Land/World: 2 games, one for 3DS and one for Wii. Of all these, probably the best.
- Mario Kart: lots, going back to the SNES.

Mario's okay and all, but I think I agree, he could use a break.

Unfortunately, MK8 is the closest we'll get to a new F-Zero.

MK8 is certainly an improvement over mk wii. Features include : Online that works still, higher resolution graphics, new tracks, and the ability to upload replays to youtube. Oh, and a counter to blue shells.

FWIW, I got my WiiU on Friday, for Mario Kart 8. I am extremely happy with that decision. Both the system and the game are top-notch.

Nintendo is taking their time getting their tentpole titles perfect before releasing them, instead of doing the thing of rushing them all for the system launch, and MK8 is proof of concept.

I have played Mario Kart Wii more than I've had hot meals, and adore it. Mario Kart 8 is absolutely better.

Things Wii U needs (IMHO):

-A new Metroid Prime
-A new Star Fox
-A new for-realsies Zelda would be nice
-A new F-Zero would be way way way way way way way way cool

And I would be totally ok if they tried some new freanchises (I guess The Wonderful 101 might be that?)

oh my goodness a new F-Zero would just own completely

also, I can dream about a new Super Metroid-caliber 2D entry in that series, right? Zero Mission and Fusion were all right in their ways, but nothing beats the pure sequence-breaking, actual-secret-skill-developing joy of Super Metroid.

Lego Star Wars is by no means Nintendo-exclusive though. Mario, I think, it'd be nice if they made another 64/Sunshine style game. (Sunshine: very underrated!)

Zelda could potentially be nice. I really hope whatever Nintendo's cooking for it, it's better than Skyward Sword, aka "let's wreck the series mythology and somehow forget what makes Zelda work, Wii edition."

Since someone asked upthread, Pikmin 3 is great, but it's TRICKY. Puzzles involve using three different squads of pikmin simultaneously(sometimes they need to be doing different things in different parts of the level, and sometimes they need to all work together in a single spot). Also, you have to find fruit in the world because every day you use a bottle of juice up; it's a nice compromise between Pikmin 1's hard 30 day limit and Pikmin's 2 unlimited time.

I just want to say that I think that 3D World is legitimately the best Mario game ever made. Yes, even better than Super Mario Bros. 3.

Points:
Best implementation of multiplayer in any Mario game ever.
Peach is playable as a primary character for the first time since Super Mario Bros. 2. (Yes, you're still rescuing damsels, but progress is progress.)
Cat Mario is an outstandingly excellent powerup. (Not to mention the rare variant which scratches all sorts of SMB3 nostalgia itches.)

Don't forget all the little homages to every previous Mario game (the four characters have roughly the movement traits they did in SMB2, there are Super Mario Brothers 3 Goombas and Super Mario World Goombas and they look and work differently, etc).

Me, I cannot for the life of me see what the point is

I ended up getting a Wii U a week ago even though at first I was rather negative about it. What changed my mind was that there are games I wanted to play, so for me the reasons were:

Super Mario 3D World (lots of inventive one-off ideas, got perfect marks almost everywhere).
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze (I loved DK Returns for the Wii)
The Wonderful 101 (it looks pretty humorous and innovative - that's my free game from Mario Kart)
Mario Kart 8 (a steal, considering you get a free game with it)
The Zelda: Wind Waker remake (part of the bundle and I wanted to replay it)
New Super Mario Bros U (which won't turn my world upside down, but it should be fun).

I haven't got a ton of free time, so I figure that these games along with a new Zelda, hopefully a Metroid and the odd indie and emulation make it worth it for me. I also have a PC for indies and the odd AAA game that interests me.

I will admit, the game is damn fun. But that doesn't excuse all the many MANY versions of 2D New Super Mario Bros. they've made. I actually missed one above, there are two DS NSMB games.

Once the management of the pizza mines gets off their duff and I can finally go get Mario Kart, it'll probably be Pikmin 3 I get for the extra. I already have Wii U Wind Waker. Wonderful 101 looks very nice, but the Pikmin games have been so good. Back in the day I actually completed the 9-day challenge for the original game, and the 8-day challenge in Pikmin 2.
