a party game for horrible people... online

You can play Cards Against Humanity online using a free webapp: Pretend You're Xyzzy is a CAH clone that allows you to join a game with random strangers -or- you can set up a password-protected game for you & your friends only.

(And if you disdain strangers but your friends won't play with you, then you can try the Random Cards Against Humanity Play Generator.)

Cards Against Humanity, the Most Offensive—and Lucrative—Game on Earth - "Cards Against Humanity, the hit card game created by Temkin, 27, and seven friends, may be profoundly irreverent, but it also has a soul. Sticking to principles has helped the group overcome long odds and survive mistakes and bouts of pure stupidity that probably should have doomed their fledgling company. Instead they have the top five bestselling products in the toys and games category at Amazon.com (AMZN), where customers have given them more than 14,000 five-star reviews. That’s a level of devotion that can’t be explained by shock value alone."

*Cards Against Humanity official website - where you can buy the game, or print it off for free
*Cards Against Humanity custom card generator - make your own cards, ready for printing

How many comments into this thread will it be before someone sets up a Metafilter game?

I ask because I won't be home for an hour or so.

(This is completely legal, incidentally - the CAH people let anyone make a clone product as long as it's free and they don't use the CAH name)

I saw this on MeFightClub and there was definite interest... As long as you've got Skype/ventrilo/some kind of audio conferencing software so you can hear everyone lose their shit.

I've never played CAH but always wanted to. If anyone sets up a game, mefi mail me the info and I'll jump on board.

The only problem with playing without actual cards is that you can't play with the house rule that you can discard stuff that's offensive or triggering, so you can end up with a hand full of shit you don't feel comfortable playing.

afternoon game started.
The password is: mefi

I'll sit around and see who shows up - if I'm still alone at 6pm (PDT) I'll find something less interesting to do. =D

I'll be home later than I thought (fucking carpool, grumble grumble), but hopefully by 6:00.

I'm in pretty much the same vein as far as time goes.

Here's a quick bit of help:
- You can join a game already in progress
- If the cards are jumping around or blocking other cards, there's a, Animate checkbox in the upper right corner.
- The current game allows for 10 players and 20 spectators, so if you if it's full to play, you can come watch (or start another game!)

There's also Pomme, Apples to Apples the Animated GIF version. It's ... not bad!

CAH is ok, but my preference has always been other foot--a game a few of my friends came up with about 10 years ago. Like Calvinball, it's never quite the same game twice.

And the mefi game is apparently full and I can't get in.

I can't even find the Mefi game.

Dark Shadows fans can download a custom deck lovingly titled Collinsport Against Humanity, with questions such as "____ washed up at the foot of Widow's Hill again," and answers like,"Glued-on Muttonchops."

I was up at the cottage last weekend and the card game was a big hit, as was the "Librarians against Humanity" set I printed off. I love playing the online one when I can get a few friends together at the same time. Playing it with people who are not native english speakers (and thus miss a lot of idiom) is the best though!

What is the best is playing with your 74 year old father and getting beat, hands down. I don't think my face has been that red since I came into this world, kicking and screaming.

I am so glad there is a MeFi game set up! I've tried to join games with strangers before, but I found most of the open games had custom decks and not just the standard cards, and I wasn't a fan. This is fantastic.

Thank you all for much fun. The last two hours of my work day were shit-tastic. Playing this game with you, and laughing lots, made it all okay. So thanks.

Also: The "my vagina" card will win every time. So there you go.

[So that] you can discard stuff that's offensive or triggering

I thought the entire premise of CAH is to be as outrageously offensive and repulsive, as possible.

This is a bizarre rule.

The entire point of the game is forcing players to make uncomfortable and offensive comments. You really should be playing a different game if you're concerned about this. Apples to Apples would be a good non-offensive alternative.

No, the point is to be funny, which is at least in part about understanding what is going to cross a line from "transgressive" into "hurtful" for the people you're playing with. The game's creators have acknowledged this.
posted by kagredon at 8:52 AM on July 10, 2014 [5 favorites]

Yeah, I read that, and its' ridiculous backpedaling.

Sure, the point is to be funny, but they include all those offensive cards for a reason. It's intended to be raunchy, offensive humor where people play cards like "the Jews" or "historically black colleges" in answer to questions that create incredibly offensive phrases. It's the clear intent of the game to encourage players to make such offensive choices, hence the name Cards Against Humanity.

And Monopoly is intended to be a game where landing on Free Parking does jackfuckall. Are you seriously that upset about other people's house rules?
posted by dekathelon at 9:10 AM on July 10, 2014 [4 favorites]

If the Monopoly house rule was "No owning more than 1 of any colored space and no hotels allowed" then while yeah, you can play however you feel like, I'd think there was a point that got missed, no?

Actually, given that one of the things that makes Monopoly boring as shit is that it's too easy for someone to build up a critical mass of moneymaking properties before anyone else has their feet under them, I'd like to see how that kind of game would go.
posted by kagredon at 9:17 AM on July 10, 2014

I'll play the game however the fuck I want, thanks, and if I want to avoid spending the length of a game staring at a card that turns my stomach and want to provide the same option to my friends, that's my business.

The game includes a house rule option for discarding stuff you don't understand, this is just an adaptation of that.

I personally prefer to play with people who are actually funny, not ones who rely on racism and transphobia for ~edginess~. I'm sorry that you apparently have to rely on using game mechanics to coerce your friends into making offensive statements for amusement, because I prefer party games where people create jokes instead of defaulting to a 14 year old's cache of "ironic" bigotry.

LOLS FOR THE LOL GOD.

dekathelon, if ever you want to play CAH online with anyone, I'm there. Personally, I prefer creatively edgy humor, and I will tell you what, I've been in some uncomfortable rounds of CAH.

Stewriffic, did that game get hijacked or something? There are only two people in there and I suspect them of not being MeFites, both because of the gross racism in the usernames and because the gross racism was misspelled.
