AirAsia Flight QZ8501 from Surabaya (Indonesia) to Singapore lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control at 2317 GMT. CNBC reports that the plane had asked for an "unusual route" before losing contact.
AirAsia is a Malaysian low-budget airline, unrelated to Malaysia Airlines, and has not had any significant air incidents so far.
