His looks to camera as Hozier kicks in - brilliant!

This is your official warning that the video for Hozier's "Take Me to Church" is upsetting.

Also, awful and amazing is right. I loved the agonized off screen "TURN IT OFF" in the third one.

The last one (in reply to Deadspin) is INCREDIBLE.

But can anyone explain WHY it's so freaking incredible by the end? I thought the first one was terrible but continued clicking through until I was barely holding back tears of laughter at the Deadspin one, but I don't understand how it happened.

Because it's art.

(that's not just a joke.)

It's like he's rickrolling himself. And us. And that guy in his office.

As someone who's been following and making mashups for years these have more effort put towards them than a good third of the ones I've come across. A little time-stretching goes a long way.

For those who don't know, @electrolemon (aka Demi Adejuyigbe) is also the guy behind for this classic.

This made me feel like I was in a staring contest. (I lost every time.)

I am forever in favor of people spending a lot of time and attention crafting a deliberately terrible product. The deadpan straight man routine is a bonus in this case.

The point where this started to get funny was also the point I couldn't take any more of that godawful song.

Electrolemon is wonderful and silly on Vine as well.

This is the only thing I have ever enjoyed about "Take Me To Church", which I'm going to assume is playing right now on at least one radio station in this market.

I love this. His deadpan is wonderful. And I kind of hate "Take Me To Church". (Also, a few of the mashups sound like they could be legit good if someone tried.)

Also also, since this is The Mashup Thread right now, guys guys listen to this Taylor Swift / NIN mashup IT IS THE BEST

I kind of like "Take Me to Church"? But that's probably because I only heard it once before today. I didn't know it gets as much radio play as it does, and the news that it's somehow a pop hit is actual Bizarro World shit.

I love the song. I mean, like, I'm in love with it. But I still think this is funny. I bet Hozier would get a kick out of it. y'know, cos I know him so well

Ha, I had a rental car for a couple of days and was thus reduced to listening to the actual radio, and it was only then that I realized "Take Me to Church" had blown up. I had been linked to the music video by a friend and spent weeks obsessed with the song, and I hadn't realized it had hit the mainstream. I love the song and am somehow still not sick of it yet, but I still thought this was funny too.

Using the mashup with "Semi-Charmed Kind of Life" as an alarm clock? Brilliant.

Electro lemon isn't "this guy" Deadspin. He's a national. goldang. treasure.
Thanks for the post god bless your family.

I have to admit, I've been trying to figure out why folks love this song so much... I'm not trying to knock on anyone's musical tastes, I just don't get it. (Watched the video once, and now I change the radio channel when it comes on.)

That song plays, by my conservative estimate, fifteen million times a day on the radio station they play at my gym. I am in favor of doing terrible things to it.

(Also, here is electrolemon's mashup of Creep and Crocodile Rock, and here is his mashup of, well, you go ahead and find out for yourself. Really, you must.)

Whenever I hear this song I crack up. It's so bloody awfully overwroughtedly gross, and this guy is like, supposed to be an up and coming star? I didn't realize this song was by Hozier. Incredible. It's the kind of thing I'd expect to be played in one of those Boondock Saints kind of movies where two guys are on their knees in a dark alley during a rainstorm, baring their chests to the world as they fire semi-automatic handguns into the sky. TAKE ME TO CHURCH

theory - this song signals the beginning of your (not YOUR, of course) VH1 years, as far as the industry is concerned - that's why you hate it
