They're actually saying "hashtag" (sounds like "ashtag" in French). But the officially sanctioned term is mot-dièse (literally "#-word").

Give credit where it's due; the video was directed by Sylvain Chomet, whose 2003 feature film "The Triplets of Belleville" was nominated for an Oscar (actually, two, Best Animated Feature and Best Song), and did the recent "French Couch Gag" on The Simpsons.

Stromae is pretty great.
The music is good, and danceable. The lyrics are not your usual pop fare, to say the least. Broadly, they are about stuff that actually matters.

it "sounds like" ashtag in French because there's no aspirated H in French.
"hashtag" is only used for hashtags
just like it's called a pound sign in English otherwise
or a sharp in music, or for C#
the pound sign is "dièse" in actual French as used in France, "mot-dièse" isn't used
a sharp is "un aïgu", but C# is called "si-sharp" in France
"un petit bleu oiseau tweet" is, I'm sorry, terrible French. There are loads of French-speaking MeFites, do please feel free to drop us MeMail. It should be "un petit oiseau bleu qui tweet", for instance. There could be other possibilities depending on what you want to put across.

ooooh on relistening, the wordplay's even better:
"c'est comme ça qu'on s'aime, c'est comme ça consomme"
There's no "qu'on" in front of "consomme", which accentuates the inherent objectification.
"this is how we love, this is how it consumes" except in the French those blend together via alliteration.
I chose to translate with "consume" because it is part of the play in French. "Consommation" is "consumption" is "consommer" (the verb) which is also "to consume" as in "to eat/devour", which you can grok with the video.

That's a bit US centric, in most other places it's hash or number sign, and the pound sign is £.
(But true symbol hipsters as myself prefer to call it lumberyard.)

I like everything about this except the message which is either nonsense or just not translated very well by the subtitles. Twitter is evil how exactly?
