If one has a Roku there is an Animal Planet Live channel; I am watching the mother and her calf live via their feed, right now.

I missed the birth, though.

That's how my mom gave birth. Is there some kind of problem with that?

Giraffe babies come out hooves first, which calls to mind that old song:

Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
You've got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight

I have been GLUED to this for DAYS and did get to see the birth. It was awesome! There almost was another end to the story.
Katie grew exhausted and tried to lie down. She was startled back to her feet and it was fine!
The little female calf is endlessly charming running circles around her mother.

I'm not sure whether "birth means falling six feet to the ground" or "leaving the nest means falling hundreds of feet down a sheer, rocky cliff" wins for Most Hostile Way Of Introducing The Next Generation To The World.

Nature, sheesh.

Soon the Giraffe Cam (Katie) will go off - air permanently. A bit over 2 million people watched. The baby giraffe will get her name Friday.

The new baby giraffe's name is Kipenzi. The live feed was ended yesterday. It was wonderful. Dallas Zoo has a very good barn for their giraffe herd. The keepers are excellent. This was a great experience for people who love giraffe.
