I realise that one of these links has been on the blue before (here) but to be honest we could all do with more animal magic shows in our life

"Labracadabrador" deserves to be Word of the Year!

I've known dogs who could sniff out a bacon crumb seven continents away. This strikes me as very odd (though awesome)!

I love the look. What? What kind of fuckery is THIS?
posted by Naberius at 12:41 PM on October 29, 2015 [12 favorites]

The reactions of the dogs in that first video are great:

Elsa: Why would you inflict this torture upon me?
Taisto: THAT'S AMAZING THAT'S AMAZING THAT'S AMAZING THAT'S AMAZING
Nakke: You're kidding me with this shit, right? No, really.
Gado: Dog.exe has experienced a serious error and must reboot. (repeat several times)
Nino: Did he poop it?
Dumle: I get it now...the human was the treat all along!
Sälli: BURN THE WITCH!
Torsti: Y'know what? Fuck this, I'm out.

Poor Coco from the second video. all "... treat? treat!.. wait where's the... oh i guess there's no treat after all... well it's okay.... that's okay.... i probably didn't deserve a treat anyway... "

"Today we're going to find out how sheep react to card tricks."

...it turns out to be frighteningly similar to how freshmen react to calculus.

Tuutikki (1:00, second vid) has been deceived before. A lot. At this point all he can is give you a "why did you want to do that to me?" look.

Those guys are going to lose some fingers messing around with those barnyard animals like that.
posted by Diagonalize at 12:54 PM on October 29, 2015

Yeah, fingers probably feel much the same as hot dogs and carrot sticks do when you're chomping down on them.

Nakke is such a good dog! Give Nakke a treat! Poor, patient Nakke!
posted by maryr at 1:06 PM on October 29, 2015

I was wondering about the scent thing as well, especially since the hidden treat isn't very far away at all. (Closely watch the section of the first video that begins at 1:11 and you'll see where it goes and then how it got there.)

Maybe it's not really a treat and the dogs are just curious to see if it IS one when they get confused by the disappearance?
posted by Ian A.T. at 1:08 PM on October 29, 2015

Love how they don't give a fuck about anything but the promise of those sweet, sweet treats.
Reminds me of the best joke from Jimmy Fallon's stint as co-anchor of the SNL Weekend Update:
Lulu, a pet kangaroo that helped save the life of an Australian farmer last year, will be honored with the RSPCA's National Animal Valor Award.

Or, as Lulu the kangaroo will think of it: Not Food.

zombieflanders, the reactions in the second video are, if anything, better.

I love my dog dearly, buy my god we bred so much out of them. They're just so loving even after he basically screwed with their tiny brains.

Their ancient ancestors are howling in their graves, "Don't trust the shaman! He will hide the treat every time! And he won't let you poop in the cave."

As far as I can tell, with perhaps one or two exceptions, the dogs react to the mysteriously levitated wiener in the same way they would react to someone holding it: they will try to eat it.
posted by namespan at 1:58 PM on October 29, 2015 [1 favorite]

Mocca is the best. She (or he) knows there's something wrong with the wiener, but her attention is focused entirely on the human. Like she's trying to figure out how he did it.

I've done the disappearing treat with dogs before and they love it... but pretend to throw a ball without actually throwing a ball and they are all 'WTF, dude!'

OMG I was right. In the video that Johnny Wallflower linked to it seems like Tuutikki is this guy's dog, the one he practices on. Poor, poor Tuutikki.
posted by benito.strauss at 4:17 PM on October 29, 2015 [6 favorites]

I think that they can pretty quickly smell that the treat isn't there anymore so they know it's gone and start guessing at where it's going to be. Some think that he might have dropped it so they start sniffing around the ground trying to figure out where it is. When they see or hear him move, they check back in with him to see if he knows where it is or has another one for them.

One of the things I love about having a dog is that I can screw with her constantly and she is just delighted.

How dogs react to magic:

1) If it is suspected that food has escaped, immediately check the floor.
2) If food is not on floor, proceed to imploringly searching the human's face.
3) On realizing you've been duped, look around for hidden camera.

Unless you're Sälli, in which case you just yell "OH THIS IS SOME FUCKING BULLSHIT."

I do this to my dog literally every time we play fetch - it's amazing he hasn't lost all trust in me for fucking with him like that. It makes him run twice as much, though, which is great because he's some sort of crazy high-energy collie/spaniel mix. I think he actually kind of enjoys it - it's part of the game.

Horses: oh, no carrot? Whatever, fingers are good too.

Goats, at first: We don't trust you, don't even come over here.
Goat, later: Ah, avoiding you *was* the right answer.

Dumle has the right idea: the treat is missing? Well, I guess I just have to start kissing the nearest human, and it'll get me a new one.

A) This is the best post ever.

B) It's a good thing he only tried this bullshit on Alpacas and not Llamas. Llamas will give you a face full of Llama spit if they like you. If they don't like you...

C) I'm not sure I could continue my dog magic career after being on the receiving end of some of those looks of reproach. Ukko is not mad at you, Ukko is just disappointed. Ukko expected better.

D) This is the best post ever.

Note to self: Do not attempt to trick a Doberman.

Puh-leez. The Dobie was the ONE dog that clearly new that this trick was some bullshit, it was up his sleeve, but this was all on video so I'm just going to play with my leash to be cute instead of tearing a whole in this moron's sweater to get that damn treat back. I'll just wait until this hooman forgets about me and takes his sweater off and then delishus treat will be MINE and sweater will die for it's part in this farce.

The rest were just regular dogs.
