On January 6th, 2016, The New York Public Library made over 187,000 digital items in the public domain available for high resolution download. NYPL Labs released a visualization tool to help people understand and explore the collection; another tool helps you mine all that sweet, sweet public domain data.

They've also created a series of Public Domain Remixes to illustrate some ways to use the materials:
  • In the age of segregation, the Green Book listed hotels, restaurants, bars, and gas stations where black travelers were welcomed. Navigating The Green Books lets you map out trips you would take.
  • Mansion Maniac is a maze-building game that lets you explore mansion floor plans from early 20th century New York City, sourced from the Apartment Houses of the Metropolis collection.
  • Compare the photos from the 1911 Fifth Avenue from Start to Finish collection with 2015's Google Street View with Fifth Avenue, Then & Now.
Have an idea for a project? Apply for the NYPL Labs Remix Residency.

You can learn about the different collections at their blog.

I found some stereo pictures on the site. I took pictures with my phone then used Google cardboard to view them. Then I found a link to this site, which makes them easier to view.

Heh, so if you look at the visualization by date it shows something with a whole bunch of pictures apparently published in the 11th century. I tried searching by restricting the date to 1000-1100 but found nada. Turns out it's 1025 in the islamic calendar, which corresponds to 1616CE.

The last mansion I explored generated two boiler rooms connected by a living room. A louder and warmer residence you could not find. I was also very fond of the entrance hall which led to a vestibule which led to an entrance hall which led to a vestibule which led to a kitchenette. THE GRANDEST KITCHENETTE.

Can't figure out how to link directly to the Genre->Stereoscopic visualization, but I'm having fun looking cross-eyed at the monitor.

Oh, I could get so much use out of Mansion Maniac in designing Call of Cthulhu adventures!

Er, or not? It looks like it's just randomly strung-together rooms?

There doesn't seem to be any check for whether a new room overlaps a previous room. Which I guess you could argue is a strange, maddening, non-Euclidean geometry.

Mansion Magnet would be all these rooms printed on magnets that you can arrange on your fridge.

My children just made me play Mansion Maniac for two solid hours so possibly I overstated my desire to play it ALL day because two hours is plenty.

Also they learned lots of words related to rooms!
