We had some of his work in a show where I work. It was pretty amazing in person, very complicated, challenging. I appreciated the chance to learn about him.

If you ever get a chance to see his large paintings in person, be prepared to have your brain scrambled. Very powerful. Last show of his that I saw was this.

Such depth and density. So much life of his is his works. I am only now learning of him after his passing.
I can feel how the world was better for him having been in it.

I met him once as part of a class along with William Arnett and several of the Gee's Bend Quilters. I never particularly valued his work personally, but he was an interesting man to meet. He seemed to have a drive to always be creating something, in particular I remember him creating a number of small wire sculptures for students on the spot.
