The Scottish SPCA is looking for a new home for Atlas, a continental giant rabbit. "Giant rabbit?" you ask, "How big could a-- Oh dear lord will you look at that." The 7-month old, nearly 6-kilogram Atlas is still growing, and the SSPCA wants you to know that "A standard rabbit hutch won’t do so his new owner will need plenty of space for him."

Lot of good eatin' on a rabbit that size.

That is a disturbingly enormous rabbit.

Do I remember that the Teletubbies show was made with freakishly huge rabbits, so they would look normal-sized next to the giant teletubbies costumes?

I was with some friends in Pittsburgh when we saw someone taking their rabbit on a walk. This is Suitcase, a Flemish Giant (I think, this was two years ago). The walker told us he'd grow to be around 20lb.

The wikipedia page on Flemish Giants has some big bunnies.

Funny, he looks a lot bigger than a cat of equivalent weight, I think it's the ears.

Lagomorphs of unusual size? I don't think they exist.

OH! S P CA! I misread that as SCA and I thought he was bred as some kind of Ren Faire stunt, like to show how big rabbits REALLY were in those days.

Good lord, just donate that thing to SETI. I'm sure they'll find a use for it.

I find giant Scottish rabbits rather frightening, after the whole Caerbannog fiasco.

Reminds me of Brown Buck. He had been a stud at the university labs but had become too old for the "work". A student who lived in our apartments adopted him. He was huge. Easily as big as the one in the article. She would just let him out and he would graze on the front lawn. Local cats would come by to check him out and then slowly back away sort of saying, "Nope, nope, nope..."

If you go to your local county fair, some of the 4H kids might be showing enormo-rabbits, although I don't think I've ever seen one quite as enormous as this rabbit.

Pretty sure that rabbit could take my cat in a fight.

And I've got a pretty huge cat.

Forget the cat. That rabbit could probably take most of us in a fight.

My (Glaswegian) GF's comment after I read the story was, "I like how you Americans say CAR-DONALD."

And also, "That's 5 pounds lighter than our cat."

Yes, they were. Our vet at the time was the official vet for the Teletubby rabbits. She had one at home that had been retired due to injury. They were big rabbits.

Every rabbit I've had has been able to take on the cat...

So, I live out where it used to be rural, before dallas and Plano ran out of room to the north and west, and started moving east. We used to have coyote and large raptors that would keep the bunny population under control. Now, there's so many bunnies, it's like a Victorian Easter card up in here.

And even though I know I have a massive warren under the back yard, with dozens of babies about to spring forth like an adorable tidal wave of foliage destruction, I now desperately want a giant bunny.

Much as we seem to think of rabbits as skittish prey animals, they may be tougher than we suspect. I remember when I was growing up, one of our neighbors had a big lop-eared rabbit (not as big as this giant but pretty darn big), a German shepherd mix and a doberman. The rabbit lived in a fenced enclosure adjacent to the big fenced dog run, and I asked my neighbor one day, "Isn't the rabbit afraid of the dogs?" She said, "No, the dogs are afraid of the rabbit." I always had a lot of respect for that rabbit after that.

It's related to something called The Watership Initiative, very hush-hush.
