I was surprised when my dad knew about this meme shortly after it launched. Then I learned that at Caltech, where he worked, a bunch of young hoodlums had stencil-painted "ALL YOUR SPACE ARE BELONG TO US" on many of the parking spaces in the garage.

(Which made me think of my father telling some yout' at a cell phone shop about the Rolling Stone's "Get Off of My Cloud" and pulling up this video on his phone. They were talking about backing up calendars and The Cloud and such, and that's where my dad's mind went, but the kid didn't know the song. We're all getting older, but there's so much history at our fingertips.)

About ten years ago I downloaded a bunch of data about BRAC, the commission doing the military draw-down of the 90s, so I could look for political correlates of who won and who lost. The point was so that I could write a paper called "All Your Base Are Belong To Us." But in one of life's great cruelties there wasn't anything immediately interesting in the data.
I wonder if I could write "How Is Babby Formed?" Maybe something on state-level adoption of fetal-life laws or laws treating fetuses as additional victims in violent crime?

Here is an old timeline of events for the meme, for the scholarly among us.
Basically it comes down to four things: the goofy video game, JRR (the Something Awful forum member who made the song), the SA forum thread that made most of the famous images, and then Bad_CRC of Tribal War, who took the song and those images and made the famous video.
It's unfortunate that the Something Awful forum thread that started all the image macros has been deleted from their forums, but I think it's been archived out there somewhere.

Jeez. So All Your Base hasn't quite officially been a thing for more than half my life, but we're getting close enough to that milestone that I'll pretty much definitely live to see it. Yikes.
I remember thinking the video was so awesome in high school and now all the 'shops just look embarrassingly amateurish.

I had a kind of crappy weekend wherein I learned that someone about my age from an online community I used to participate in ca. 2007 died on last week. And then during that conversation I learned that two other people I was actually a bit closer with had ALSO died in the last couple of months. So as a coping strategy I was reading silly image macros and trying not to think too hard. In conclusion: this amusing thread is timely and appropriate. Thanks cortex, effbot.

I sometimes wonder what the future of cultural artifacts like this will be. Will AYB be in used in some nostalgic movie in the mold of the Wedding Singer to establish that it is indeed 2001? Will it be featured in some undergrad class on internet history/meme studies/viral engineering?

Just informed the 2 friends I have from high school, that I play in a band with and have had crazy ups and downs with for... I guess 16 years? I thought this was older. Seems very formative, but I guess the last year of highschool lasts much longer than the first few years of your 30s.

I was working in The District when this came out. My buddy and I just laughed and laughed at the video, especially the "move zig" part because we were twelve. I had been putting in 18 hour days trying to run from the blast wave of an emergency Y2K financial system implementation that went live in October. There was a snowstorm one night that February, but no chance for fun. Anyway, It got to be after midnight, and on a whim we decided to go out and stomp "All your base are belong to us" into the snow outside the IT building. My business partner went up on the roof and took a photo but I'll be damned if I can find it to share with y'all.

I present to you: THE OLDEST PICTURE ON MY HARDDRIVE! From 8/16/2002. It is located in the "Kitties" folder, which much to wife's surprise did not contain porn.
Technically, THIS IS THE OLDEST PICTURE ON MY HARD DRIVE! It is dated 2/20/2001. But it is in my "4chan" folder and 4chan did not exist yet so I do not understand what manner of sorcery was involved.

So around that time there was this random person that somehow got herself mistakenly convinced that my cell phone number belonged to some ex boyfriend or other nemesis of hers. She would call me every few minutes, let it ring two or three times and then hang up. Never picked up when I called her back trying to explain she had the wrong person, completely ignored all the texts I sent her telling her to leave me alone. My phone was some antediluvian clunker, or anyway I couldn't figure out how to get her blocked, so this went on for days. At some point, I'm standing in line at the bank (we still had banks back then), and the phone keeps ringing twice, then hanging up every couple of minutes, annoying everybody around me. Don't ask me why, but I start texting back lines from AYB; silence for a few minutes and then she calls, lets me pick up and asks what's wrong with me. Finally gets to hear my voice, realizes I am not who she's trying to harass and finally leaves me alone.

pseudonymph, I was in a cab last year when Tunak Tunak Tun started playing on the radio. I said "nice song" and the driver replied "Yes, it is from my home... Very... big." "All your base are belong to us" and the Zero Wing opening cinematic were already pretty well known as examples of badly translated videogame text. On the Something Awful side, user 'Tom' started a thread called "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US" with the first message being "ON THE TABLE!" (a fortune cookie joke where you append "on the table" to your fortune, same with "in bed"). Someone then photoshopped a fortune cookie pic with the phrase as the fortune. (It's possible that a picture of ALF saying the phrase came directly after Tom's post, before the fortune cookie.) At that point everyone pulled out their image editors and got cracking.
I have a bunch of the original images still saved and many of them are not great; they're just the phrase 'shopped on to the usual "funny" pictures as crude speech balloons or just overlaid text. Some, though, are fantastic. "The Yellow Yell" was already known as a very talented photoshopper and his(?) images are really well done.
Over on the Tribal Wars forums (which had a long-standing rivalry with the SA forums) the SA thread inspired them to do the same thing. I wasn't on the TW forums, so I don't know what all happened there. Bad-CRC took some of the images from both forums, set them to The Laziest Men on Mars/SA user JRR's pre-existing (I think) song, "Invasion of the Gabber Robots", and created the Flash video. This is what really spread the fad outside those realms, including news and press reports (I have a couple images of those). No one was contacted about their images being used, but Bad-CRC credited folks.
The SA/TW rivalry then really heated up over who "started" it. The general consensus was that SA started the images, but TW's creation of the video gave it legs, which seems accurate (again, I wasn't on TW.) I remember being cross with Lowtax (the owner of Something Awful) because for some reason he wanted no attention brought to SA over it. At the time the site was in deep financial trouble and I figured this would be a great boost to it, but he wanted it distanced. I don't know why.
It was a really cool experience to be part of something like that as it was taking off. For a while I had a shirt from ThinkGeek with the phrase on it as a sort of memento of it.
