As Bugs Would Say, "What a Maru"

Anime Maru is a site that combines two of the internet's favorite formats: Anime and Fake News. Kind of an Otaku Onion. If you have any doubts, check out the site's list of the Top 27 Anime Series of All Time which include some fictitious entries (#5. Attack on Death Notepunch-Man) and some that are not very anime (#17. National Hockey League). Knowledge of the medium is required to get some of the jokes, but not nearly all.

My list is well over 500 anime at this point and I’m pretty proud of it, it’s probably my greatest accomplishment.”

Pfft. Slacker.

They're not wrong about Gintama though.

Wow, MartinWisse, that's a lot of anime. I only recently started watching so my list is a lot shorter :-)

#16. Boku no Pico
We don’t want to spoil anything about this masterpiece, if you haven’t seen it, go watch it now, don’t look up anything beforehand.

This is good.

I hope someone serious finds this and takes offense at Cowboy Beebop being placed so far below Dog With A Blog.

I somewhat disagree with them about National Hockey League, though. While it does have an important legacy, the quality has dropped off significantly in the past couple of decades, and I feel like they're spinning their wheels somewhat now. I much prefer the grittiness of the Toronto no Kaede years, or even the over-the-top violence of the late-'70s chapters.

I will say that Gary Bettman remains one of the great Anime villains, up there with Light Yagami, Gendo Ikari, and Lord Khyron.

I have to admit, they pulled my chain. Bodacious Space Pirates is an excellent series, but it's action adventure, not comedy. So I bristled for a moment and then realized that was exactly what they were trying to get me to do...

That hack? He just made some movies, right? Did they involve giant robot space wars? How can you take him seriously if he doesn't do giant robot space wars?

Okay, I was a little pissed at their left-handed dissing of the original Astro Boy: "clearly the first example of a medium stands as the best, with nothing else able to top it. Astro Boy must be the best, and we’re sure we’ll get to it eventually". All 104 episodes of the 1963 original have been put up on YouTube; sadly, half have been taken down including the first episode with the character's origin and a serious Pinocchio homage but what is left shows well the imagination and humor that made it one of the best things in the overcrowded 'kiddie cartoon' venue of my youth (not quite up to Jay Ward/Bill Scott level, but who will EVER match that). But even better to me was Osamu Tezuka's next series, 1965's "Wonder Three/Amazing Three" with the wonderfully off-the-wall premise of aliens come to pass judgement on Earth disguising themselves in the bodies of Earth Creatures, a horse, a rabbit and a duck. Then "Kimba the White Lion", which even though it filled much of its half hours with the same scenes of animals running across the African landscape, still was pretty good (and SO OBVIOUSLY the inspiration for Disney's "Lion King"... Hamlet, my ass). Then somebody else made and imported "Speed Racer" which started America's "Anime Craze" in spite of even more repetitive scenes of going around the racetrack (and after Ward/Scott's "Tom Slick" it was very weak sauce). Now get off my Anime lawn.
