A tale as old as time...

Megan Kearney's wonderfully-crafted graphic novel take on Beauty and the Beast.

You can start here to read from the beginning. The story is 418 pages long so far, and is presently in the middle of Act Two.

Warning: Spoilers in the links below!

Kearney does an nice job of acknowledging and addressing the problematic power dynamics built into the fairy tale, and brings forward a Beauty that holds her own and a Beast that is, in his own words, heartless, but not unsympathetic.

The official comic Tumblr has links posted to updates, but also a lot of other Beauty and the Beast-related content, as well as scholarly (or at least informed-layperson) discussion of the fairy tale in all its many forms.

Fun, I like the little herb drawings at the start of each chapter.

The herb and flower drawings are a message in the Language of Flowers, and hint at what's coming in the chapter they precede.

This is pretty, but I sure wish it was published in a format that didn't require me to scroll every page into place in order to view them. Either an image gallery that clicked through without reloading the background page or a page with the navigation to the side so that the images loaded at the top of the page, would work. But click-scroll-read-click-scroll-read is just too aggravating to make me want to keep reading.
